The reason I'm starting a new thread is to highlight our need for skilled forwards in the upcoming draft, I think most loyal fans have seen enough of losing 1 goal games because we couldn't score, we have had enough of having basically one line able to score, we have enough of needing D-men and then procure forwards like the Marchand fiassco, NOW THAT WE HAVE A CHANCE TO ACQUIRE IMPACT POTENTIAL FORWARDS IN THIS DRAFT I SINCERELY HOPE THAT THIS HAPPENS and that we are not clouding the situation by drafting defencemen early in the draft and before we even think about a D-man we should have a good goalie prospect as well. History has shown that if we do this well the fans will return but if we stray from what should be the obvious then more fans will disappear and the situation could get real serious. I go to ALL the games and I have a real passion for the team and have since the 1st season back in 1994/95 but these last two seasons have been stressful with a definite lack of skilled players, now is the time to correct a lot of the weaknesses, again I state FORWARDS< FORWARDS<FORWARDS.

If the best player available is a defenseman then you take a defenseman- that is the way the draft is looking like at #2; we still have 4 other picks in the next 35 plus our #3 overall Euro pick to get skilled forwards. You can always trade to get the players you need if you have built up depth elsewhere- a prime example is Moncton, if you draft well ie TAKING THE BEST PLAYER AVAILABLE and NOT PISSING PICKS AWAY by drafting for need and passing up very good hockey players, then you can always trade later for waht you need- like Moncton getting Deschamps, Bourque and Tessier. If we draft Matheson then by the sounds of it we are shoring up our defense even more, and heck if we drafted another defenseman in the Euro draft, as long as he is the best player available then we have assets to trade for forwards later on.

I totally agree it would be nice to sit in rink and know you have five or six really good scorers on a team..But always you grab the best players you can at the draft and try to build around your picks by trades if needed...But would love to see a Nagy come over again it would be great also there have been a few others too over the years that could put puck in the net..Don't want any Russions and they are too moody..Look at Washington Caps in NHL Russian let them down a 40 goal scorer no goals 51 goal scorer what 5 goals and did really nothing ... I would like maybe another Peter Vranta or even a German the one we have now is going to be a star in this league within two years...

Moncton and the like had the luxury of having agood team to start with and in that situation you can afford to go that way however our situation demands that a definite need is accomplished and that is to get better right away OFFENSIVELY and while there are no guarantees for success, one way to fail is to not address your weaknesses, while adding to your strength ( we have loads of young developing defensemen) what is needed are FORWARDS and a POTENTIAL GOOD GOALIE. I got a question for all who say take the best player in this year's draft where there is a lot of opinions about who is the best, how much of a difference do you think there is between the best d-man and the best forward ?? When you are in our position you draft according to need, and that need is clearly for OFFENSIVE FORWARDS, next year we can have the luxury of drafting the best regardless of position, when we should have a competitive team to start with. Do you not remember in the 2007/08 season when we were very much in need of defensive players, we choose to trade for the best player (MARCHAND) and both he and the team were a flop, this is really no difference we didn't take care of the opportunity then and if we do the same thing this time around, it could be the third strike and we are out. ( OF FANS ).

( OF FANS ). There is a lot wrong with your post... a) Moncton wasnt as good as they are now when they drafted talented players which they then turned into those guys MF1994 mentioned...so im not quite sure what you mean by them having a good team to start with. b) There is a large difference between Matheson and any forward available. Here is a question...who would you rather have Gormley or Bournival/Asselin?? Because from what ive seen...Matheson has the potential to be an NHL 1st rd pick based on his tools...I dont see that with any of the forwards out there this year. c) You NEVER draft for need with the top pick...or a pick in the top 5...its ludicris to even consider taking the forward when the defensemen is lightyears ahead. d) You start to draft for need in the 2nd round and later...but if there is a huge difference, or say you have 10 dmen ranked next when your pick comes up, are you going to opt for the forward, even though you have him ranked as the 11th best player left? No...youd be dumb to do that. e) The whole point of the draft is acquire as much talent and potential QMJHL players as possible...this league allows trades, so why sacrifice talent when you can always exchange talent for talent. f) And im not quite sure what you mean by 'in our position'. Halifax isnt on the cusp of winning the league like Halifax was 2 years ago....when you are about to make a run for it you fill your needs. You dont fill your needs on draft day, especially when youre 2 years away from actually making noise in the playoffs.

I'll explain it for you ... we had a good team to start with. You seem to be suggesting that from September to December ... Moncton wasn't a good team. Thats all he said ... "good team" ... didn't say contender ... didn't say 1st place ... didn't say powerhouse ... just said "good team". He knows the part about getting better because we made trades ... he knows we are better now than we were pre-Xmas trade period. What he is saying is we had a solid base to build from. But 99% of all teams that decide to buy at Xmas have a good team to start with ... this years VD squad is an exception of course. CB had a "good team to start with" ... so did RN, Drum, Vic. I'm not agreeing with his point of view ... just wondering why you are arguing the point. All contenders "have a good team to start with".

Steve, Lala is saying that Halifax is roughly where Moncton was two years ago. Sharrow seems to think drafting for need now is a good thing and for some unknown reason, used Moncton (a contender) as a comparison for Halifax (a non-contender).

Because when I read Sharrow's post...I got the impression he was talking about what Moncton;s situation was before they drafted guys like Gormley, Domingue, Bissonnette, etc...which would put them as a LAST place team.

When your team has scored 171 goals over a 68 game schedule its clearly obvious where you are lacking and I never indicated that we are going to be a contender this coming season my concern is that we are competitive and hopefully in the mid pack of the league and I don't see any Gormleys or Crosbys in this years draft rather alot of opinions about who is the best. We are in the 2nd phrase of rebuilding, the 1st phrase we drafted and traded for defencemen and we have those who are developing, now is the time to concentrate on filling the holes on the forward lines with those early picks, its quite simple really once you get past this notion that you take the best player when there are various indications that the best player is not that much better, it depends on who you talk to and remember we have a good D-man coming in Lewis.

Im not suggesting that Halifax goes out and drafts 4 or 5 dmen with their first 5 picks...but what you arent quite grasping is the fact Matheson is quite good... Plus it depends who you ask...in my opinion Matheson is far and away the best player eligible...so I see picking him as a no brainer (assuming Baie-Comeau doesnt take him). But if you ask someone who thinks Matheson is on par with guys like Ciampini than you can justify taking the forward. Moncton scored a whopping 191 goals in 07/08 and guess who they took #1 overall... I hear people talking about Halifax's depth on defesne...and while the Mooseheads have depth...its not like Matheson would be the #8 dman. In my opinion he would be #4 on the depth chart behind Amyot, Clarke and Abeltshauser next year...he will be better than Gillard, Hannay, Bishop and Lewis, as early as October.

Fraser will fall out of the top 5 and possibily top 10...heavily overrated player, and once you factor in his personality and attitude I cant see anyone taking him in the top 5... Poulin has injury concerns looming...you wont see a better PP shot than the cannon that Poulin posses. Long story short...it depends who you ask. I think pretty much everybody at this stage has Matheson as the top guy...after that its a free for all...

c) You NEVER draft for need with the top pick...or a pick in the top 5...its ludicris to even consider taking the forward when the defensemen is lightyears ahead. Tell that to Savard who has already come out said the Rocket are taking a goalie with their top pick because the Rocket are going to need a goalie after Mosher is gone

Another major thing for the braintrust of this organization to strongly consider is that we are losing 40% of the 171 goals we scored during the 2009/10 season as follows: Cheremetiev 3, Knotek 28, Bahm 9, Bernard 8, Stoddard 1, Costello 1, Wiggington 3, Bety 13 and Dimitruk 1. Further proof that we need to spend all our energy and time on obtaining SKILLED OFFENSIVE FORWARDS as we need to acheive at least the 220-230 goals for to hit the mid pack level and be a competitive team in this league. While we all have our opinions there can be no disputing the clear fact that we seriously need OFFENSIVE FORWARDS who can excite our fans and grow the base any thing less is unacceptible. Michael Matheson has 5 goals and 6 assist in 30 games played against his own age group measure this against the fact that we need OFFENCE NOW THIS SEASON and you should come to the conclusion that Matheson is not what is needed in Halifax at this particular time. The crisis is that we are desperate to improve our OFFENSIVE OUTPUT THIS SEASON. Our efforts have to be to acquire three forwards and a goaltender within the first two rounds. The facts indicate this should be the plan.
