Another major thing for the braintrust of this organization to strongly consider is that we are losing 40% of the 171 goals we scored during the 2009/10 season as follows: Cheremetiev 3, Knotek 28, Bahm 9, Bernard 8, Stoddard 1, Costello 1, Wiggington 3, Bety 13 and Dimitruk 1. Further proof that we need to spend all our energy and time on obtaining SKILLED OFFENSIVE FORWARDS as we need to acheive at least the 220-230 goals for to hit the mid pack level and be a competitive team in this league. While we all have our opinions there can be no disputing the clear fact that we seriously need OFFENSIVE FORWARDS who can excite our fans and grow the base any thing less is unacceptible. Michael Matheson has 5 goals and 6 assist in 30 games played against his own age group measure this against the fact that we need OFFENCE NOW THIS SEASON and you should come to the conclusion that Matheson is not what is needed in Halifax at this particular time. The crisis is that we are desperate to improve our OFFENSIVE OUTPUT THIS SEASON. Our efforts have to be to acquire three forwards and a goaltender within the first two rounds. The facts indicate this should be the plan. If you need offense RIGHT NOW then you better look at TRADING YOUR PICKS because no 16yr old is going to step in and run our offense up front. You seem to be expecting a lot right away from these kids....have you learned nothing from the last couple of years?

Right on Jack, we are talking draft here and during or after the draft we will be acquiring an 18 yr old and possibly a 19/20 who could give us the a big part of the 67 goals that we are losing.

Sharrow have you even watched Matheson play...or any of the forwards that are available?? If Matheson is as good as you say (and the CSR scouts obviously believe) then we wont get him anyway. Why would BC pass over the far and away best prospect available? All because of a fucking coin flip- Thank you Rimouski!

Lala what concerns me somewhat is that there are two services which differ vastly on Matheson also in talking to a number of scouts at the AAA Midget Tournament at St Margarets Bay they have a difference of opinion all of that aside what I'm simply saying is we don't require a number 4 defenceman as much as we need to fill a 1st & 2nd forward line. I respect the fact that when your needs are not as grave as ours, you would probably pick the best player, what would you do in this case you have two capable goaltenders and the best player in the draft is a goalie what would you do ? And to answre your question no I have not seen Matheson play nor have I seen the Quebec forwards that is why I seek your info from time to time as well does other posters.

This may potential scare Baie-Comeau away... There is someone on Radoter who stated perhaps Halifax will flip picks with BC and throw in Carl Gelinas to do so...not sure how legit that rumour is...but that goes to show you how far ahead Matheson is compared to everyone else in this draft.

ISS didnt have Matheson in their top 10 as of March...that goes to show you the credibility their rankings have...I wouldnt even bother looking at their list to be quite honest. I think a lot of people are overrating how 'good' this Halifax defensive core is. There are still some huge question marks, its not like the Mooseheads have 6 all-star dmen back there and Matheson will have to fight tooth and nail to get into the lineup. There is not a single forward in this draft who is going to fill a 1st or 2nd line hole as a 16 year old...so im not quite sure what you meant by we need a 1st or 2nd line forward more than a 4th dman...

You have to take the best player available. Our defensive corps it not stellar. Yes it is good, and has potential to grow, but a big reason it viewed as having so much potential is compared to our offence its miles ahead. Now your next reply will be "exactly thats why we need offence". That thinking s wrong. If we pick an ok forward instead of a great defencemen ...what happens comes next season or worse the 2012 run.......... if Konrad gets hurt, and Clarke gets worse with his problems. We then have Clarke sent home, and Konrad on the injuried list. No we have a weak defensive corps. Whos to say we don't get a stellar dmen in the draft and trade away Konrad for an ok forward, and keep Knotek another year. The forward we picked could not pan out, and theirs a team with the defensemen we should have picked doing a stellar job.
What I am trying to say no matter how bad or forwards are the best Dmen available gives you way more possibilites

Lala, do I understand you right, theres a RUMOUR your not sure of the legitimacy of this rumour and because of this so called RUMOUR, you are now claiming it shows the interest that the Mooseheads have in Matheson ( thats what I call a real stretch of the imagination ). This deal would never happen its has the smell of our former G/M and don't think that Russell or Smith would be the least bit interested in that deal ( this further weakens our offensive abilities with Gelinas expected to stepup and provide point production ). We have to add players like Gelinas to the team and maybe our D-men won't develope as planned, we then have other means available to correct this situation, however it still stands that JOB #1 is to increase and develope forwards.

Sharrow everyone who knows anything about the QMJHL knows the Moose have had one player that could put the puck in the net (Knotek). Other then him we don't have a player that give some hope that something could happen. So with him now pretty much done and gone we need scorers more so. But what everyone is saying is there is no Crosby in this draft where a 16 year old forward will stepp in and lead the league in scoring. Since we have such a high pick and the best players in the draft are Dmen you take him. Now if you feel a forward is still what is needed you could call a team like Bat or Chi and maybe switch picks and get another top round pick so we have 6 now in the top 37 or get a player that can put points up. The reason I picked Bat and Chi I think they both would love to get one of the 3 D and in Chi case they could pick 2nd and 3rd to get two of them. I think a good move would be Chi for the 6th and 22nd pick. Another thing you still for some reason don't get if this Matheson kid is so good and we can get him then we can package one of the other defense men and pick/forward for a scorer. There's also the Euro pick that for some reason you have yet to talk about. You want to talk about the history of how we pick and stuff if history tells you anything about this team we have a high percentage rate of getting highly offensive players with that pick. And having the 3rd over all pick gives us a great chance of doing it again.
Basically taking the best player gives us more options then taken a player for need.

Moncton and the like had the luxury of having agood team to start with and in that situation you can afford to go that way however our situation demands that a definite need is accomplished and that is to get better right away OFFENSIVELY and while there are no guarantees for success, one way to fail is to not address your weaknesses, while adding to your strength ( we have loads of young developing defensemen) what is needed are FORWARDS and a POTENTIAL GOOD GOALIE. I got a question for all who say take the best player in this year's draft where there is a lot of opinions about who is the best, how much of a difference do you think there is between the best d-man and the best forward ?? When you are in our position you draft according to need, and that need is clearly for OFFENSIVE FORWARDS, next year we can have the luxury of drafting the best regardless of position, when we should have a competitive team to start with. Do you not remember in the 2007/08 season when we were very much in need of defensive players, we choose to trade for the best player (MARCHAND) and both he and the team were a flop, this is really no difference we didn't take care of the opportunity then and if we do the same thing this time around, it could be the third strike and we are out. ( OF FANS ). There is a lot wrong with your post... a) Moncton wasnt as good as they are now when they drafted talented players which they then turned into those guys MF1994 mentioned...so im not quite sure what you mean by them having a good team to start with. b) There is a large difference between Matheson and any forward available. Here is a question...who would you rather have Gormley or Bournival/Asselin?? Because from what ive seen...Matheson has the potential to be an NHL 1st rd pick based on his tools...I dont see that with any of the forwards out there this year. c) You NEVER draft for need with the top pick...or a pick in the top 5...its ludicris to even consider taking the forward when the defensemen is lightyears ahead. d) You start to draft for need in the 2nd round and later...but if there is a huge difference, or say you have 10 dmen ranked next when your pick comes up, are you going to opt for the forward, even though you have him ranked as the 11th best player left? No...youd be dumb to do that. e) The whole point of the draft is acquire as much talent and potential QMJHL players as possible...this league allows trades, so why sacrifice talent when you can always exchange talent for talent. f) And im not quite sure what you mean by 'in our position'. Halifax isnt on the cusp of winning the league like Halifax was 2 years ago....when you are about to make a run for it you fill your needs. You dont fill your needs on draft day, especially when youre 2 years away from actually making noise in the playoffs. if Matheson has the tools to be an NHL 1st rd pick then there is also the possibility of losing him when he's 18.

Tell that to Savard who has already come out said the Rocket are taking a goalie with their top pick because the Rocket are going to need a goalie after Mosher is gone I don't think he said that at all... he said he intends on drafting a goalie to replace Mosher with one of his early picks but didn't say for sure it would be with the 11th overall

Qfan69 everybody who knows anything about this league knows that your returning players usually move up the lines (at least the good ones like Gelinas, Desjardins etc) and they have to be replaced by young talented skilled players who will develope and grow so that in a couple of years they become the cornerstone of a contending team, without a successful weed and feed system you cannot hope to be a true contender. It is my opinion that we are going to do a lot of weeding on the offensive side of things and because of this we need to feed our system with high quality draft picks as in forwards of course the higher quality the better cornerstone we will have by contrast they will likely be little weeding on the defensive side (other than maybe trading a D-man and a goalie) thus the concentration has to be put on offensive forwards and a goalie prospect with the early picks. One last thing if Matheson is anywhere close to Lala's high rating you can rest be assured that we will have no chance of obtaining him as a large number of teams will be talking to Baie Comeau endeavouring to acquire that pick, strangely I don't hear much of that happening at least yet. Remember the goals for this organization should be (1) Raise our goals for to at least the 230-245 level, (2) Reduce our goals against to the 250 level, (3) continuing our developement of the younger players and (4) raise our nightly fan base to the 6500 range again. Ataining these goals will ensure us of a mid pack position, competitive team, successfully continuing the rebuilt program, an exciting on ice product that features a recharge offensive ability with a responsible defensive backside and one that the fans will embrace and hopefully Moosemania will return to the Metro Center, C'mon Russell and Smith get those OFFENSIVE FORWARDS AND A GOALIE IN THOSE EARLY PICKS, add these ingredients plus some a couple of trade acquistions and success is around the bend, GO-MOOSE-GO will be heard thruout Moose Country.

And according to you the best way to do this is to NOT take the best player available in the FIRST ROUND of the draft. Everyone sort of sees you as shortsighted/pigheaded on this. Hfx has tons of early picks. Use the first to get the best player available and then use all your 2nd and 3rd round picks for good young forwards.

I know there was a point in time when Baie-Comeau was supposed to be interested in taking Dominic Poulin who without his injury issues could have been ranked #1 so that might mean Matheson would be available at #2.
