I'd like to make one addition to your statement, thecrease. "Good" draft picks are the foundation of a solid winning team. 1st and 2nd round picks aren't automatically solid (I apologize) "building blocks" or "cornerstones". Wise and timely trades and good free agents can speed up the process.
deer, jack and any other posters so inclined, how about scoring the draft picks, year by year for the last 7 years. Evaluations could range from A+ down to D-, or something like that. Have the Eagles management been doing a consistently good job in your opinion?

I'll give it a try for the first 2 picks and a player from the later rounds that turned out well from each year starting in 04. Rd 1 - James Sheppard Rd 2 - Dean Ouellet Rd 5 - Chris Culligan All turned out to be amazing picks. All were team captains and all 3 were extreamly great players and great people off the ice. To be honest I think the Eagles should retire Culligans #7. He was one of if not the greastest Eagle of all time. Rd 1 - Scott Brannon Rd 3 - Maxime Gervias Rd 5 - Nick MacNeil Rd 6 - Robert Slaney The Eagles moved up to aquire Brannon in the 05 draft. He really never reached his potential until his trade to Moncton as a part of the Bourdon trade. Turned out to be a solid Q captain just not for the Eagles. Gervias young brother of Islander Bruno never made it . The Eagles picked two more future captains in rounds 5&6 in MacNeil and Slaney who were great Eagles. Rd 1 - Mark Barberio Rd 2 - Matt Stoddard Rd 5 - Nicolas Chouinard Barberio started his Q career playing top 2 minutes with JC Sawyer and looked to have a bright future in CB but a midseason trade saw us watch him develop in Moncton. Stoddard was also traded that season for Jo Laberge, Stoddard never stuck in the league after playing with Saint John and Halifax. Another 5th round steal was Nic Chouinard a small fiesty winger who impressed me from the first time I saw him play in training camp. I think he has a strong chance to score 40 this year in Montreal. Rd 1 - Samuel Finn Rd 3 - Olivier Roy Rd 9 - Francis Meilluer Finn started his second season with an "A" and looked to be progressing nicely when he was traded to Lewiston for our half assed run. Roy was the steal of the draft IMO. Too drop all the way to the 3rd round and have the talent he has, something was screwed up. And well what can you say about Francis Meilluer? Maybe our best 9th rounder of all time and key componet to our defence the past few years and he was traded for a 6th. Now Enter the Mario Era. Rd 1 - Logan Shaw Rd 3 - Morgan Ellis Rd 9 -JS Fournier Shaw has yet to prove himself as a top 9 forward, this is the year he will have to do so because of the lack of offence we have. Ellis another player who lala had a correct comment about back when he was drafted saying he had captain written all over him. And well he did, he will be a key componet if we make any run in 2012. As for Fournier he has potential as a 19 yr old to put some points with the lack of depth. The jury is still out on the past few years , you be the judge.

Good point. "Good" drafting is easier said then done. With the resources available (Central Scouting) teams should be able to get plenty of information on players and also see them play plenty of times. The trading periods should be used to make the team better, either present or for the future. We could also rate the past trading periods and see how we think the management has done.

Any team that relied only on Central Scouting and the CSR tournament up in Montreal would miss out on a lot of very good hockey players. Their evaluations over the years have caused a lot of head scratching, I'm sure.
Do you remember who was ranked 2nd overall, behind James Sheppard back in 2004?

Agree, can't rely on Central Scouting especially for the later round picks. That's where solid, hard working, character players come from. The identity of the team can be mid to late round picks that know they have to work to make and stay on the team.

2006 draft also included Gouchie, and Quesnel to go along with Barberio and Chouinard. All the top players listed here drafted under the Pascal era were also good character guys and hard working players. We even have to give Vincent some credit in us landing Ellis, since we drafted him with the pick we recieved in compensation for him leaving town.
The jury is still out on Mario's picks. One positive is 8 guys from 09 played for us at some point last year 1. Cuzner 2. Veronneau 3. Parker 4. Saab (traded to Lewiston) 5. Bergeron 6. Mac Intosh 7. Herrett 8. Riguse Jodoin and Boudreau- Plouffe will be there this year. I'm not saying any of these guys will be stars but Mario's guys certainly could have done worse, especially since they never had a 1st or 3rd round pick.

I doubt Chaisson gets a spot. Kind of like the McCarron situation, he will be 19, 4th liner at best, so no sense using up a spot on him with so many young kids who bring more to the team.

anybody think Chaisson has a chance to get a cut at the line up this year, I mean anything is possibe right? Why have a 19-year-old fourth liner who won't be on the team in........ the year I can't say because it's recently been deemed a dirty word?

Until the actual host for the 2--2 Mem Cup gets announced, there will be at least 4 teams building for that year. Maybe the team should be more focused on producing a solid team in 2010 and 2011.

I've only been closely following this team for 2 1/2 years now, but, I'm seeing a trend in the way Mario is running this team to the ground.
Does anyone fear this will happen:
1. Team is decent. Maybe not as bad as everyone thinks. 2. Team will make the playoffs, probably as the 2nd last or even last place team. 3. Mario forsees that the team is going to make the playoffs and at the deadline decides to "load up" again. This is called patchwork. 4. Mario trades away any draft picks that we have left and potentially some great players - Ellis, etc. This puts our rebuild out another few years.
