Jack, when I talk about the value of 5th round picks I'm not really talking about building a Memorial Cup team because I think that's a "crystal ball" dream! I'm talking about building this organization back to respectability. Extra 5th round picks besides being used to draft a real strong contributing player can also be used very effectively in improving draft positions for higher picks and in trades.
Someone mentioned PV earlier and even after the great disappointment of the 2004 All Star Team's failure, he clearly knew the value of draft picks. Pascal had acquired extra top 5 round picks with an extra 4th and 5th that helped speed up the rebuilding process. All 7 picks played in the Q with 3rd round pick Sebastien Dube playing little but being used to help acquire Alexandre Blais in a trade. 4th round pick Kyle Stanley was lost in the 2005 expansion draft. 4th rounder Francois Gauthier was traded to the Sea Dogs in December of 2006 for a 5th round pick and Etienne Breton our last 5th round pick played a season and a half before going to Rouyn-Noranda (?). The Eagles certainly got an awful lot of mileage out of their other 1st, 2nd and even 5th round picks. Except for Jacques Lemaire's ego, if Shep had been returned to the Q, they might have made a 2nd strong playoff run in the 2007/08 season (if the prices weren't too steep?).
The Eagles clearly had every reason in the world to sell last December with Moncton and St. John stacked and going for it and every chance to rebuild by trading Adam, Roy, and any of 3 defencemen to acquire good young players (even at the draft!) and multiple draft picks so they would have a legitimate chance to develop a Memorial Cup contender.
That's all history I know, but here we are still throwing top 5 draft picks away!
