Decent player but a really weird fit. He's a finisher with good size but not the best skater or very physical. He probably bumps Murphy down. He isn't really a good fit on a checking line. As I see it, Karabacek probably already bumped Murphy to the 4th line, assuming Karabacek will play with the Klimas. Richard just joins him there. Maybe they dump Johnson and go get an OA goalie(Guindon)? He was rumored to be going to Bathurst a few weeks ago.

Joey Richard to the Cats for a 5th in 2017. Decent player but a really weird fit. He's a finisher with good size but not the best skater or very physical. He probably bumps Murphy down. He isn't really a good fit on a checking line. To say this is weird is an understatement, not only is his skating sub-par, he's softer than a cotton ball and has been hurt much of his career (actually coming off an injury). As you say he's a finisher but nothing of exceptional note, maybe he's being brought in to bolster the PP but outside of that it's definitely a head scratcher.

Rather have Reilly Pickard That is probably who Shannon thought he was getting. Want to see the look on his face when the kid tells him he's a winger...

Ok ... that seems to be it. I'm not sure where Pickard and Richard will play once Bower, Karabacek, Murphy are back in.
It looks like they are trying to build a big crash and bang 4th line with McEwen centering Cormier and Pickard (or Richard), but that looks to leave Corson and Murphy on the outside.
Adding Richard makes no sense really ... but they paid a 5th for him, and he is 19, so they won't be sending him to Jr A. I don't think they can even send Pickard to Jr A without having to waive him. I don't see where Richard fits in unless maybe Karabcek, Murphy, or Bower are hurt long term. Even then we have bodies that can move up.

Daryl MacCallum traded from Chic to VD for a 9th. I think we would have been better off to get him instead of Bouchard and let him and BMD fight over the #1 slot.

Richard is not a crash and bang player...at all...he is similar to Leger but bigger and slower.
