This is a good start to this thread... Habs Chronicle @habschronicle · 54s55 seconds ago More Prospect expert Corey Pronman has ranked the #Habs farm system as 6th best in the NHL (23rd last year) Here's our top 10 under 23. As far as prospects go though, top 3 are Kotkaniemi - Ylonen - Poehling. Top 20 prospects... 1.Jesperi Kotkaniemi - C 2.Jesse Ylonen - AD 3.Ryan Poehling - C 4.Noah Juulsen - D 5.Joni Ikonen - C 6.Cayden Primeau - G 7.Jacob Olofsson - C 8.Allan McShane - C 9.Josh Brook - D 10.Cole Fonstad - AG 11.Cale Fleury - D 12.Jake Evans - C 13.Cam Hills - C 14.Will Bitten - AD 15.Matthew Peca - C 16.David Sklenicka - D 17.Charlie Lindgren - G 18.Michael McCarron - C 19.Daniel Audette - C 20.Jordan Harris - D My opinion is, it's not yet a finished product, they need to max out the value of Pacioretty and also likely Byron as they have a surplus of wingers plus have a strong 2019 draft. Having a pile of centers hopefully means they no longer have to try and convert wingers(Galchenyuk Drouin etc) to center going forward. Evans Poehling Kotkaniemi Olofsson Hillis and McShane all have a chance at being NHLers. Plus Danault and DLR already NHLers. Drouin I think they will give him another season to see if he will stick at C.

Not sure why they're taking the route of letting this drag on all season and hang over the team. It seems obvious both sides want a split. By keeping him until the deadline you're limiting who will want him. The return will be similar from any team that does...2019 1st...A or B level prospect...something else like a 2nd/roster player...so why wait and out and risk more of a fallout or injury and derailing another season by letting a black cloud hang over it from day 1? I think the sooner they make a move the better they'll be from it.

Even last summer after Markov and Radulov left, MP's value was probably 50% higher than what he'll get now or at the deadline.

Allan Walsh just lit the powder keg...and called "check" on Bergevin. Allan Walsh (@walsha) · Twitter twitter.com/walshaMax Pacioretty has stated repeatedly that he loves Montreal and wants to remain in Montreal. To this date, he’s never received any offer from Montreal. You can have 3 sources or 10 sources, how many times does Max have to state that he wants to remain in Montreal long term? Obvious these “sources” are coming from the club. Max will always take the high road and repeats again, he is ready to sign an extension with Montreal TODAY. It was Montreal that traded Max to LA at the draft and it was a DONE DEAL subject to Max signing an extension with LA.

I don't think the Habs want the Pacioretty thing as the theme of the season...
I would guess the Kane and Wheeler extensions are a pretty good framework...
Kane got 7 years at 49M at 27 Wheeler got 5 years at 41.25M(8.25 AAV) at 33
Pacioretty's new deal would start at 30
So looking at 6 years at 7.5-7.75M
He has been a better player than Kane without the baggage. Wheeler has had more points but less goals usually but with Scheifele at center helps.
If I was MB I would do things to maximise the return...1-allow teams to talk contract 2-willing to retain 50% of cap hit/salary. 3-willing to take on a salary dump(preferably only 1-2 years left).
If you can do all that plus get an extension signed, he should be worth a 1st rounder in 2019, plus a highly rated prospect plus probably a 2nd/3rd rounder or B prospect. That's about 40-50% better than as a rental IMO.
Rumors are the offer with the LA deal that fell apart without the extension was Toffoli and Vilardi, that would have been a great return.

Seems to be a good deal for the Habs. Get a 20 goal scorer (will make up part of Max's goal output), a top prospect and a 2nd round pick for essentially a 1 year player. I give this a solid 8/10. For the record, I'm not a Habs fan

Not a Habs fan but this is a very soild return. More than I though they would get on an expiring contract.

Tatar was a healthy scratch more often than not for Vegas. He needs to bounce back in a big way for this to be a good deal for Montreal if you ask me.
