Seems excessive to me ... sign stealing has been going on as long as baseball has existed. The electronic cheating does take it to a whole new level, though.

The teams were all warned after the Red Sox got caught with the apple watches that severe penalties would come down the next time someone was caught, they continued to cheat anyways. Sign stealing is one thing, setting up technology to relay that information too you is a whole new level. Alex Cora is going to get suspended for all of this too.

Plus they needed to establish how seriously this is being taken. Throwing a fine of a million dollars or whatever amount doesnt really matter to this thekes with the amount of money the are taking in. This type of suspension actually will make other teams think twice about doing the same thing. Although I'm not entirely clear what happens in a GM suspension.

My take is guys need to be suspended because the use of technology for stealing information has the ability to completely change the game and give huge edges that teams can't counter protect against.
Sign stealing, stealing information in general, is something every high level team/ballplayer is doing to "steal"as much info as possible. I hate when fans hate on players for stealing signs because EVERYONE does it and its not cheating. It is a part of the game. We used to have every player focus on one piece of the pitchers body during warm up (foot, hand, glove, forearm, face, etc.) at the beginning to try to pick a difference in delivery between pitches. Thats just one example of the great lengths teams will go to to know what pitch is being called.
It was always thought of as the other teams job to protect against stealing signs. There really is no counter or protection when technology is brought into the equation and completely ruins the integrity of the game.
One outside the box thought I had during last years playoffs. Since they have completely changed the game with technology already with video replay (and robo umps soon) why not go to some sort of audio play calling like in football. helmets could have audio, and hats could have those bone conduction headphones. I think going forward there's always going to be uncertainty of being cheated against as there will always be motivation to use technology for an edge.

Cora seems to have done it twice so his suspension will probably be double of what Hinch got. How would you feel if you are the LA Dodgers ? They lost two World Series to cheating teams. I'm a Redsox fan and in year one under Cora, our offense was electric. They always played it up to be a different hitter approach, but it was really just knowing what pitch was coming. Last year they were not the same offensively (still good, but not to the same level) and suffered as a team because of it, maybe they weren't cheating last year. Starting pitching also played a big role in last year.

I have no issue with guys on the field seeing something from 2B and relaying it to the hitter, it’s up to teams to adapt their signs. Using the video room and tapping on a garbage can is a whole different ballgame.

Having players at 2B steal signs is quite different than having somebody do it in a video room and banging on a garbage can.

I have no problem banging on a garbage can if that’s how they’re relaying things they’re picking up on/seeing by watching the picture with their own eyes. The only red flag in this for me, is the aspect of technology. I’ve stolen signs playing baseball but I didn’t set up video cameras to do it.

so stealing is ok but using the evolution of technology to do it better is not? sure that makes sense
you still have to hit the ball, catch the ball, make the right play on the field on the basepaths etc
if you're going to allow technology to overtake everything else related to sport i don't see why this is such a big deal
i also didn't really care about Pete Rose or the steroid era either tho

Batting averages would sky rocket and you would not be watching anywhere close the same game. Nothing better than smashing something offspeed you know is coming. Without a runner on second, the only way to know what is coming is if a pitcher is tipping pitches. The only thing that can be relayed otherwise is location and there's ways to protect. you cant protect against video deciphering signs repeatedly.

I also don’t care about steroids since it wasn’t banned and those players shouldn’t be punished for doing something within the rules at the time. Using technology though to steal signs is strictly against the rules and gives a team a huge advantage. Much easier to hit a pitch when you know what one is coming. If it wasn’t forbidden then I’d have no issue with it, since it wouldn’t be against the rules. Since it is though, I think you have to lay the hammer and make an example of them. Which they did and I think they got correct. It doesn’t put an asterisk beside their WS IMO, they still won and cheating or not you can’t then hand it to the team that lost. It makes me pause and think what might have been if they had of played within the rules though but that’s neither here nor there.

baseball in general is so flawed.... i think this ruling is ridiculous...... but i respect those who think the game is still somehow pure and pristine and that this will do anything at all
