Anybody think that Shane Doan leaving the Coyotes and Arizona for the AGM job in Toronto says that he sees the handwriting on the wall for the future of Hockey in the desert ? He'd have to be blind to not see it after the last debacle basically sealed their fate. He actually left the Coyotes last fall - so not leaving now for Leafs job. Not sure why he left at the time.

He was in the community for many years there. Was watching the political theatre unfold and likely seen how 1 side was clearly better prepared and that the vote for a new rink wasn't going to be a positive one. The NHL media didn't really pick up on it until the days leading up to the vote. But I bet many locals knew what was unfolding months ago.

Interesting discussion about Matthews contract. Sounds like he isn't signing for 8 years or giving them any kind of discount. Makes it hard to win when your top guys all prioritize the money over winning.

Don't care about the taxes. Don't care about it being in Canada. McDavid signed for 8 out of his ELC. MacKinnon just signed for 8 after a team favorable cap hit on his 2nd deal. Top guys are doing it to give their teams the most stability. Let Auston be the highest paid guy for 4 years as a San Jose Shark if thats what its all about for him. Take the 2 years and reset the deck to offer 7 years and a max cap hit to McDavid in 2025.

You probably give yourself a higher chance at a cup by getting a huge haul for AM and building for the year after Tavares if off the books. Would not be a full rebuild but more a reset. Plus by doing it now, you open up cap room to many add a player two for less than market value because of the flat cap.

at this point I'm starting to agree with all the above. As much as it would hurt to see Matthews leave, getting a boatload of a haul + cap flexibility could be a big change we need. Also forgot about McDavid being a UFA in 2025, that would be insane to try and pry him here and if it worked oh boy....

Kessel trolling Toronto...

Kessel trolling Toronto... The media deserves it. Perfect example of blaming the stars for not having a supporting cast and running great people out of town. The guy was an elite scorer with Tyler Bozak as his C for years. How can anyone not like Phil Kessel? He just comes off as a real guy who is super talented but catches shit because he doesn't look like a bodybuilder and likes to eat hot dogs. Now i'd rather the trolling be from someone who actually played in the playoffs but i'll never hold anything against the guy.

Barely saw him on the ice.

i forgot he was there too for a minute
anyways he's right
and what a passing of the cup that was last night..... 4 guys in goalie gear.. dunno if ever saw that before.... was half expecting Robin Lehner to roll out there fully dressed at the end
not bad for a team doomed to cap hell eh?
said it all along i admire a team willing to make risky bold moves to achieve their goal moreso than a team that never truly does go for it

Unless one of the Core Four is moved, it will be hard for Toronto to do anything too drastic. Likely also means Nylander and Matthews are getting extensions, starting next year with them unsigned would lead to an unhealthy situation and a huge risk of losing them for nothing/very little if they got hurt.
They have 9M of cap room right now. They could bite the bullet and pay a pick to dump Murray and put Muzzin on LTIR(any update on his situation). That frees up about 19M total with 15 players signed. You have to assume if they are keeping Samsonov he will cost at least 5M, possibly more. getting 7 more bodies at +-800k means another 5.5M so they have room for a couple of 4-5M players or 3-4 2.5-3.5M guys to fill out the 2nd and 3rd lines and add a #4-5 D.

NHL Watcher @nhl_Watcher Friedman on Leafs Morning Take talking William Nylander's next contract: "I think he's looking at least a 9 ($9M AAV), if you wanted to start with an 8, you're going to have to convince him why should you do that if maybe nobody else is going to do that"
