Nobody else is giving a Home Town Discount ..........So Why should he ? If I was GM, I would not start the season with a star player on his last year before UFA. I would take a hard line, sign or trade, if you start the season and that player is out for the year and then you risk losing him for nothing.

I would take a hard line, sign or trade, if you start the season and that player is out for the year and then you risk losing him for nothing. So much depends on the relationship and if you believe the player wants to be there. There's examples on both sides. Stamkos stayed at the last minute. Nobody regretting letting it get there. The last minute deadline 1st+2nd+player/prospect deals almost never work out well and you're never getting fair value thanks to the cap, contract status, etc. If a trade wasn't made on/around July 1 I'd be shocked if one happened in the Matthews situation. You might as well just ride it out and push for whatever his upper limit in term is. Losing a #1 C hart trophy winner for nothing would suck. But opening up $11.6 million and a #1 C on a really good team when the best player in the world is 12 months from deciding his own fate might not be a terrible thing when you happen to be that players hometown team and he happens to currently play in one of the least desirable markets in North American Pro sports.

The cap gymnastics needed to be compliant on day 1 could be to move Jarnkrok or acquire another LTIR deal. Seems like minor stuff in the big picture.
From the playoffs the group is weaker minus Schenn, Acciari, and O'Rielly. But having McCabe, Lafferty, Bertuzzi, Domi from day 1 this year should mean high expectations for the regular season, especially after Boston has lost so much.

They'll have lots of cap room next year once Matthews and Nylander are off the books.

Aho Signing to 9.75m a year makes me believe Nylander won't take less than 10M...I know Aho is a center but still. I still wonder if a deal for Pesce to the Leafs is possible, especially if Brodie is potentially bought out/moved. Nylander could be that piece Carolina needs, and could see a Canes/Leafs Conference final lol

That would be a huge risk, an injury could tank any trade value.

As a Habs fan, I want to make sure Leaf fans don't think I'm trolling....as I'm not.
The way I see things, it's just a matter of time until Matthews signs with the Coyotes.
His home team. Becomes the face of his hometown team.
It would benefit the Coyotes market/franchise a lot. Potentially save the team.
Back home close to his parents.
To me it just makes sense for Auston to move home to Arizona and "save" that franchise.
Thoughts?

The reality is these players probably give them the best chance at that and when you think you’re a cup contender, you’d rather let a guy walk for nothing and give yourself a shot to finish the job then trade them for a lesser return and ruin all chances you have at winning.
