Interesting to see Dumais backcheck. Makes me wonder why he doesn't do it for the Moose? Maybe because he trusts his D enough and doesn't think it necessary? Or he knows he won't be benched? Something like that? But Dumais probably won't get benched, he'll just get his ice time slashed. He's not The Guy, he is One Of The Guys, and there are plenty of Guys who could surpass him at any time. Carson Rehkopf leads the entire CHL in points and he started as the 13th forward until he proved he could play with more physicality. He's looking better tonight, 3 shots in the first alone. Likely that a big part of the inconsistent play yesterday might be down to nerves, for every player. All look a lot better in the early going here.

You won't believe what just happened. The guy on TSN just said "Good defence by Dumais". Never thought I would hear that. And thanks to the backcheck Canada even got another goal and he got an assist. Maybe he'll start noticing that backchecking is worth it...

I mean...realistically Dumais is going to have to up his defensive side of the game anyways if he hopes to make the jump to the NHL.

Q regular season games just don't mean that much to a player like him (rightly or wrongly). And Midge can't look down the bench at Moser and Fontaine to light a fire under his ass. You'll see this Dumais again come playoff time.

Defending at the pro level nowadays is so much more systems play and positional awareness than it is the classic "high effort backchecking" and "finishing your guy". I actually find one of his worst traits is the visible frustration he shows when his (clearly less talented) teammates mess up simple plays or doesn't get him the puck. Doesn't scream "leader" to me... but he doesn't have that on this Canada team and won't have that at the next level.

I am happy he plays for our team and he is a great goal scorer but his attitude is 'giving me the ick'. Plus, the way he's presenting himself on the ice in Halifax sometimes can't be helpful for his future career either... Don't get me wrong, I love his style of hockey and he is a great player but at points I wish he'd play harder and give 110% and not just 90%. But maybe you're right and he'll start showing those missing 20% during the playoffs.

If you love effort, MacPhee brings it 130% every shift to make up for what Dumais doesn't bring. Let's call it even.

Dumais with 1 assist at least officially. The way they are attributing assists at this tournament is notably suspect, they usually have to update them more than once, but this one was right the first time. 5 shots too. Hoping that Macklin's 5 points in 13 minutes of ice time is enough to convince the coaching staff that the Celebrini-Dumais connection needs reuniting on the 1st line...
Furlong once again stapled to Warren who per usual had a few scary moments, but not nearly as bad as the first half of yesterday's game and simple enough for Jake to get him out of hot water. Despite Canada taking less penalties, he still had 18:50 of ice time. Most projections had him as 6/7th defenseman, but he's being used on the 2nd pairing. Good steady work, and not being noticed much means he's doing things right.
Rousseau not busy at times but solid when he needed to be, ultimately made 22 saves for the shutout. Plenty of goal support from the team. By the end the horde of Canadians in the crowd was chanting his name, which is great to see.
Day off, then Team Canada gets to go against hosts Team Sweden that fully looked the part of a tournament favorite on the first day. Interestingly Sweden will have played Germany the day before while Canada will be rested. This will be the biggest challenge in the prelims, no doubt. Off chance this becomes a battle of the sub-6ft goaltenders, which I kinda dig. Canada's best game plan versus the Swedes should be do not take penalties unless it is your only option.

Denton Mateychuk is not on the Canada bench less than half a period in... Jake Furlong is now elevated to first pairing with Maveric Lamoureux. Trial by fire?
Team Canada cannot catch a break with their blue line. Tough break against the team with arguably the strongest blue line.
Hugo Hävelid vs Mathis Rousseau should be fun. 5'10 vs 5'11. Great crowd too.
edit: Mateychuk is back with ~7 min left. Big double minor pk now.

Rousseau made another 10-bell save on that pk and the camera went to Henrik Lundqvist, who had his eyes wide and was saying "wow." Furlong was interviewed in the intermission and they asked if this was just another day in the office for Rousseau... he said yup.

some sloppy defensive play from Canada. Left Rousseau high and dry. Celebrini is over rated.

some sloppy defensive play from Canada. Left Rousseau high and dry. Celebrini is over rated. And yet, he'll be drafted very high in 2024 (projected #1) and likely have a long career in the NHL. 10000000x better than you. How is that for over rated. Imagine over nothing, saying a 17 year old kid you don't even know is over rated.
