We were told on Saturday at the bbq that they were going to be announcing shortly (maybe on Friday night), that fans will be able to pick the games up in the rink via a transistor radio, and get the play by play.

We were told on Saturday at the bbq that they were going to be announcing shortly (maybe on Friday night), that fans will be able to pick the games up in the rink via a transistor radio, and get the play by play. PEI Rockey fans can now bring your radios with them to all home games and listen to live play by play action with Cory Arsenault on 97.5 FM. Coverage will be available in the Civic Centre only.

I'm not interested in play by play when watching live. If they could make use of the screens and sound system to broadcast interviews with players or coaches between periods would certainly add to the game but might hurt canteen sales if people stay in their seats.

I'm not interested in play by play when watching live. . Neither am I, but I remember when they did broadcast the games on the radio seeing a few people with ear plug in their ears. I was surprised, but there were some.

The play by play may add to some fans enjoyment of the game. I'm sure the cost of an FM transmitter is minimal so the resources going into the broadcast likely would not have made a dent in the cost of running the video system. What I'm thinking is if the video system were operational they could do interviews with players and coaches and help fans connect better with the team. The better people get to know the team the more interest they will have which might translate into more fans in the seats.

I agree why not find away to bring the screens back they must be able to get some sponsors for them or maybe use some of the money from the 50/50. I do not understand why they are able to be used I am sure some of the Rocket staff read this board please tell us. You want us to pay a good price to come to the games but give us a reason to keep coming

I think people take for granted just how expensive an endeavour this system actually is on a game by game basis. I don't know exact figures, but for the quality of replays with 3 sometimes 4 camera's you must factor in that there are people operating these things (who aren't really going to do it for any less then eastlink would pay when they are hired by them). Plus you need a Switcher who has the equipment to manage everything properly. The room that was used had multiple computers, switching equipment, communication equipment, etc etc etc.
I'm trying to stay as neutral as possible, because the replay screens were good for me to catch a fight i missed because i was buried in my computer. But it's just not as simple as setting up a camera, and connecting it to the projectors. There have been a lot of assumptions made on here about how they could make it work, where the money would come from and that it would help put fans in the seats. I can in no way (and i have tried) put a scenario together in my head with a potential season ticket buyer sitting in the Rocket office asking questions about the team and declining to purchase because we don't have operational replay screens.
Anyways, I guess i shouldn't even be commenting on this because i'm am biased to a certain extent working so closely with the team. Don't get me wrong, i'm a big part of ensuring that the experience in the rink is an enjoyable one away from the actual game on the ice and being in the entertainment industry, obviously customer satisfaction is my number one concern when i walk into any gig. But i also look at other smaller markets who don't have the screens either and seem to do alright.
At any rate, i guess i shouldn't have a formal stance on this, but there were a few posts on here that seemed to make it seem like it was a really simple task to run the system and implement it. There's a lot of people involved and it's more complex then you may be led to believe.
I hope that some people once the season gets rolling can take into account that we have high expectations on the ice this year and that the quality of hockey should make for an exciting atmosphere minus side shows and other things.

very good post but if this is a issue of money they why did the Rocket say it was because something broke last year. Don't get me wrong it is probly costly to do but I know 2 years ago they put in 1 camera for the replay and then put in a camera in the corner to give us a dufferent shot why not go back and price it with only 1 camera and a switcher guy and at least get the screens back up and from there try to use them for marketing to sponsors. The Rocket talk about being a small market team but what do they do to try and bring the fans in?

thats a great post Darcy.....and something that most ppl probably don't even think about most times.
i liked the screens and wish we had them back but the fact is they aren't coming back and with less ppl filling the seats we won't be getting anything added on anytime soon. For me i guess it was more that they gave them to us one year and they were well received and then boom they were taken away, a little bit like hearing the games on the radio. It doesn't however have any part in if i renew my tickets or not. There are many other ways to get fans back in the rink to watch the game, provide us with a competitive team, learn how to market the team in PEI, make a decent playoff run and show us that you want this team to win and you want it to happen in PEI, and sure the screens would be nice, but don't ever see them being used at the rink on a regular basis for hockey games other then maybe home opener and maybe playoffs, if we get past the first damn round.

I think darcy and to a larger extent the rocket brass are severely missing the boat here... the hardcore fans are not basing their decisions on renewing on gameday perks like replay screens or more prize draws etc.. but the perception of "cheapness" is out there and when you are perceived to be "nickel and diming" your fanbase that is not a good sign.. especially in a very small and close community where word spreads like widlfire
You don't need to please your loyal 1800 fans (tho it would be nice if you did) but you damn well better do more than you have to change your perception if you ever wish to increase and most important MAINTAIN that fanbase
For me on ice product is what I care about.. but I can definitely appreciate why so many people don't really give a damn about the franchise.... you reap what you sow.. they've been a public relations nightmare for 4 years.. and it hasn't gotten any better
and yes they did tell us the screens were broke and would come back.. don't lie to your fans.. we realize it's too expensive for you... just tell us that and go get some sponsors back
