....WOW! I came out of a meeting and saw this....holy crap Batman! Yes Jean got the team on a winning note as of late, but obviously this decision was in the works a while ago as they are announcing the new guy on Tuesday and I'll wager that the new coach has already been watching the team already quite possibly during the last road trip. Combine this news with the big win on Sunday and I smell a sellout crowd fro Wednesday night even if the Red Sox are playing....not everyone is a member of the RS Nation. If Gramps is the man, well then let's giddy up. Trivia note...Chouinard was a linemate with Bobby MacMillan in Atlanta where they finished 1-2 in team scoring in 1978-79 with 108 and 104 points respectively.

shocking he gets canned after a 3 game winning streak A decision like this isn't made overnight or is it changed by winning a few games. Right from the start of the season it was apparent that things weren't working well under Jean and it became pretty clear that Jean had lost the team (if he ever had control). Clearly Savard spent some time quietly working to find a qualified coach and IMO did it right by getting everything lined up with an experienced coach before officially firing Jean. And I am very pleased with Chouinard's credentials. Record for most games coached in the Q (988) Record for most wins as a coach in the Q (515) Record for most coaching Championships (4) Good job Savard doing your homework and doing something to support success with this fanchise. A change like this doesn't automatically translate to success but at least I now feel like the Rocket have someone who can lead this team instead of act as a barrier. Time will tell if Chouinard is the right fit but at the very least the Rocket now have an established coach who knows how to win. It is now up to the players to respond and this hopefully removes those rumoured problems which were starting to form. Can't wait for Wed and the best thing PEI could do is show up in numbers to support this move.

Well, great news that Jean is gone.
Good job Savard.....'bout time.
I personally know nothing of Guy Chouinard.....so, I really can't comment on him. According to some, he's not a spring chicken, unsure if thats a good thing. Well, they tried going young with Jean, now I guess the team is trying the other direction........let's hope it works out.
Positive thing is that Jean has now left, and hopefully the players are happy and start playing to there capibility.

Although I am guessing with his experience he is probably more of an old school Mike Keenan type coach. As with any coaching move I will be interested to see which players thrive (hopefully Southorn) and which ones digress. Every player basically starts back at square one.

Thanks....as I said, I just read this thread and really know 0 about him at all......people calling him "Gramps".......then I just found out that it was always a nickname of his.... ;D Anyway, it's good to see, and hopefully it turns the tream around! Yes, I too am curious about what he'll do with the lines. Roll 4 perhaps?

Yes, I too am curious about what he'll do with the lines. Roll 4 perhaps? I would expect that he will roll 4 lines at least over the next 2 or 3 games to get a better appreciation of what each player can do. As for his style maybe some veteran posters from other organizations (eg. Deer, Lala, Billy) could share their opinion of him, if they have one. For example is he more an offensive or defensive coach. Does he roll 4 lines or play the crap out of 2. Players coach or Dictator, etc.

What a great start to the week.
With Yannick gone, I can finally cheer for the team again. Great news and hopefully Chouinard can get the boys playing good, smart hockey. The lack of effort many nights was discouraging. Now they have a new coach, they'll definitely have systems and we should have success.
Hopefully the buzz will get a bunch of fans out Wednesday and Friday. I am sure it will.

Great News!
Can not wait to see how the team responds. No doubt there will be a period of adjustment while he gets a handle on what he has to work with and implements some changes.
I'm looking forward to learning more about him and his style as I don't really know anything as yet. I too welcome comments from others who've seen him work over the years.

I don't know how he coaches but the fact he's coached as long as he has is a good thing IMO. I hope he plays everyone, I hope he takes no shit, I hope he plays an agressive system, I hope he is tough but fair
I haven't had this much hope for the Rocket in a long long time... time to get the Rocket jersey back in rotation now

Here is a little blurb on Chouinard as a player. Of interest is his age when he first played in the Q and the NHL. Perhaps he will demand more from younger players and instill some confidence in them to contribute as he did. He also has played in two Memorial Cups as a player. That is valued experience that not everyone can share. Also was a highly touted goalscorer. He might be the coach that a Chris Doyle needs to get to the next level. www.legendsofhockey.net:8080/LegendsOfHockey/jsp/SearchPlayer.jsp?player=12266

I get the feeling that Chouinard may be a little "hot headed" as a coach. just from reading some peoples comments around the other boards.....
Still know 0 about him, but thats the way it's looking. ;D
