What was the problem with Jean anyways ! Just a question, looking for your opinions from Rocketland . How 'bout everything? Really though, the main problems seemed to be that he overplayed some players and underplayed others and that he was not motivating his players. This team has the talent to be a much better then .500 club and that's where we're sitting now, and were even worse off before last week. A change needed to be made.

This has got to be one of the best Mondays ever!!! Ahhh so happy, it is about time. I am sure Yanick is great off the ice but behind the bench he just wasnt getting it done and it is about time he got fired.

According to RDS, his replacement is Guy Chouinard, winningest coach in Q history. WOW. A double wow actually, at the news that Jean was finally fired (I was wondering if they'd ever have the balls) and at his replacement. I was wondering if this guy would ever resurface in this league! Hasn't been around since the 99-00 season, when he and his punk ass Remparts de Quebec bowed out in rd 2 to Moncton in a year they stacked the deck to go all the way. Chouinard may be the winningest coach in Q history, but I remember that year that he couldn't keep all the egos on that team in check. Including the ultimate ego of them all, Mike Ribeiro. Still though, this is a guy with a pretty good resume and could be the answer for the Rocket. I'm glad that at least the new coach in the division is certainly an interesting character! Guy's been known to be involved in a few line brawls. ;D On the topic of Jean's dismissal, I think everyone knew it had to happen this season......... but it seems odd to do it in the middle of a three-game winning streak, hours after what may have been the Rocket's biggest win of the season to date.

From what I've heard this has been in the works for a while now and they were just waiting for Jean's potential successor to confirm that he wanted the job and that he was going to take this weekend to think about it/talk to his family, etc. So I'm assuming he said yes and Savard pulled the plug as soon as he got the confirmation. No reason to wait in my opinion, I think it was a good move.

Some people are surprised by the timing but they haven't seen the wins. The two home wins weren't pretty.. down 2-0 in each game and no effort by the team. Last night in Cape Breton they were outshot something like 54-22 or something ridiculous and the CB coach said it wouldn't have been a game without Gelinas playing well in goal.. So, those are three wins but not particularly pretty. Team should be pummped for Wednesday. It'll take a bit to learn the systems but emotion and a renewed optimism will get things rolling for a few games

It was a good move and it was about time, simply the Rocket were not going to win with Jean behind the bench.
As far as the timing of it, I think Savard had to do it now if he wants to make something of this season. The trading period is coming up and by firing Jean right now, it gives the new coach a chance to evaluate the players and give his recommendations to Savard in regards of what players he wants/needs at the trading period. If Savard would have waited until after the trading period or even just before it, the coach is stuck with what he has to work with. At least this gives them some options.
Giving that, I think that in the next few weeks the players will have to show Chouinard that they are up to the task and are deserving of their ice time or else they could possibly be gone too. I think this allows players to start with a fresh slate but it also puts the onus on them to perform because Jean can't be used as an excuse for lack luster play anymore, it will be on their shoulders now.
I don't know much about Chouinard but remembering reading his name often in the Hockey News when it came to QMJHL. I'm not expecting them to all of a sudden tear up the league with a new coach, but hopefully we will see this team be taken in a positive direction and turn it around for the Rocket.

Guy Chouinard was near a ppg player in the NHL and a 50 goal scorer.....Jean player roller hockey....
Not that that defines him as a coach but I like the odds of a NHL sniper teaching the kids then the best darn roller hockey player that was ever to lace them up!

Actually Jean played in the QMJHL and the ECHL, so it's not like he never laced up a pair of skates in a competitive league

So glad we've made the change. I am excited about the potential the team has again. Back in mid August watching the first scrimmages to see what new talent we had and what improvements had come over the summer I was excited about the potential this year and very optimistic, perhaps too much so.
Then the exhibition games started and we played a slow stand around style of hockey which continued into the regular season sucking the excitement and life out of the team and the fans.
Well this is the major shake up that was needed, without it I did not have any confidence in our ability to play 500 level hockey and go beyond the first round.
Now knowing we have new direction behind the bench with some experience I'm excited about the possibility for the remainder of the season. Do I expect a turn around over night, No.
It's going to take some time to put new systems in place and there's bound to be miscues with guys out of position etc but I'll gladly live with the growing pains. I'm pretty optimistic about this team though and I think with good direction and discipline it won't be too painful and watching the team gel and hit its stride is going to be fun.
More excited about Wednesday than I was about the season opener. I expect to see the guys really hustle to impress the new boss. Can't wait to get to the rink.
