I don't understand all the fuss amount revitalizing the down town, it's small and not very appealing , it's like all cites, you could not revitalize old Montreal or old Quebec you need a downtown that can grow, downtown Moncton has very little to offer, it's small it's old, close down the streets and make it a pedestrian walkway only, it's too small for a downtown core, there were lots of other options of where a new arena should have and could have been built. but unfortunately that is not what this council decided, and now we have to live with it like it or not. my opinion for what it is worth. Reading opinions like this make me frustrated. Downtown Moncton is 'smaller' due to sprawl and moronic building decisions. I offer you the location of the casino - in my opinion, this should have been built downtown, it would have created density in the core, and bring people downtown. Look how many shows happen here! We had an opportunity to mimic what Halifax did when they built their casino... Another building decision that is up there is the decision to relocate Moncton High out of Moncton to Tankville... Densification of downtown Moncton is needed to allow the city to continue to grow; reusing existing infrastructure (power, sewer, water, roads) keeps your tax bill lower over time and produces a more vibrant core. I do agree with one point, I think downtown centre could have had a better location. If it was my choice I would've built it where the Rogers call centre is now... but I understand why Highfield Square location was chosen; it was going to become an empty lot for 20+ years unless the city chose that site... I was thinking the location could have been on the corner of King and Main St,. they were talking about it for a bit, would make it more accessible to parking from the mall(s).

Rumour has it, there is a hotel going up in that location. A private developer has owned that land for quite awhile if I recall.

Oh, to add, the parking issue is being overblown imo, but a few items I feel the city needs to address is a crossover walkway from the south side of the rail tracks to the arena is needed; people will take the shortest path possible and people will trespass so may as well take the opportunity to make it safe... see the pedestrian overpass in Riverview on Findlay. While I agree something like that is needed, it sounds like a dangerous thing on snowy game nights with several hundred people going up and down the stairs to and from the game. This structure would have to be quite high to allow clearance over trains. It would be something like the structure over Findlay Blvd in Riverview ... but with stairs. The Findlay structure has ramps on each side; no stairs. But it has the length to have a proper grade on the ramps, and height difference is better as the roadway slopes are higher on each side. At the events center the ramps would have to be very long which is okay on the event center side, but not on the parking lot side. I think those are the issues holding up the building of this structure ... that and probably CN approval.

Then the area south of the tracks make it a spiral slope, similar to what is on the Riverview side of the Gunningsville bridge? But you're right, there are considerations from CN that need to be taken into account... along with trying to keep spending to a minimum...

I think it would have to have an outside access on the event center side as well. I thought about a spiral ramp on each side but that gets more expensive. Stairs on each side is the cheapest, but unless you can enclose them and keep the weather out, they'd be dangerous. Linking it to the Event center also makes it more costly, but it would be a better idea ... but you'd still need an exterior access.

On street parking is permitted until 11:00 PM in the winter ... they typically don't do the major snow removal in the downtown until after that anyway ... and often between midnight and 6:00 AM. We've had significant snowstorms on game nights at the Coliseum and that parking lot can be tough to get out of for some vehicles. Typically attendance is way down on those nights ... shouldn't be any different.

It all fits hand in hand, if you don't upgrade the downtown, pretty soon it's like St.John where everybody with higher income lives and shops in the suburbs and your tax base sucks. If you bring people in, they spend money and everything grows from there. You can live in the past all you want, the downtown core in Moncton is far to small to be revitalize to anything great , time to move on to bigger and better, unfortunately it is too late for this opportunity, In my eyes give it up the downtown is too small, I have lived in Moncton for 21 years now and that's all I have heard we need to revitalize the downtown, in my opinion it is far too small.

So now they're actually doing something significant about it. Figure it out

From what i have been reading and hearing for years The plan has always been to have people attending the venue whether its for hockey or a concert or whatever to use the available street parking in general area of the venue, it's been discussed for years, it's practicality has been studied and the economic spin-offs has always been part of the total package for the city and all concerned to move forward with the project. My advise to all attending an activity at the venue is to make an evening of it, head there early, find a good parking spot, have a meal downtown, then head to the venue and enjoy the game, concert or whatever. Kind of the same thing you would do in Montreal, Toronto, NY.......Halifax etc.
It's a done deal gentlemen make the best of it.

Guess what’s up for debate is the continued number of Season ticket holders for the Wildcats, conventional wisdom is the number will fall off due to a few reasons in which parking issue is probably top of mind. From what has been said, the city had no real answers at the briefing held last week. The STH group is the guaranteed base of fan support and if the casual fans pick up the slack and if the inticement is to get early to park, grab a meal then game time, well that is great. Hope it all works out.

They refuse to recognize the success of other small cities in the exact same situation. The new arena will have new corporate interest that will fill the luxury boxes.. It will create buzz and it will be the place to be to see a good hockey game and enjoy a night out. If the old farts who like driving up to the front door and leaving after a 5 minute walk aren't happy...well...even the dinosaurs couldn't stop the march of time...

You are quite right, scenery change is here. Get on board or move on, I am sure in the end the new facility will be a “wow” for sure and even at the first game fans will say tis about time the old coliseum barn was vacated with a brand new comfortable place- long time coming I suspect will be the theme.

Wow, You sound really bright, these old farts supported this team for 20 plus years, and maybe they have some medical problems that don't allow them the mobility they once had, But I am sure that will never happen to you as your closed mine will never allow it to happen. Sad
