I personally think Lavallee will be the #2 next season, he’s QMJHL ready. He’ll get into 25-30 games in the regular season, represent Canada at the U-17 (IMO) and maybe play slightly less on the season as a whole then he would in Midget but will play at a higher caliber and receive more coaching.
They have some options for the #2 spot...I figure Paradis MacDonald and Gaudreault will battle for the #2 spot. Should be an upgrade on what they got from Waite last year.
I agree. One of those three will be the backup with an eye to becoming the #1 the following year ... although I can see us adding a 20 YO goaltender for the 19-20 season when that new rule comes in for goaltenders ... if our #2 this year is not ready to take over. I expect Lavalee to be the backup in 19-20 ... back to midget for one more year. But ... if Lavalee outplays the other options at camp we may be forced to keeping him.
I'm not terribly fond of the addition of another 20 YO goaltender. If Grametbauer isn't ready at the beginning of the season then I'd rather run with what we have and see who is ready for this level.
The problem with not grabbing Leclerc is that goaltending is the one position that can really derail your season if you don't have somebody that can stop pucks. I would not be surprised if the Leclerc deal was conditional on him playing here next year.

Not many 16 year old goalies are ready to play 25-30 Q games. The fact that he was a 3rd round pick and not a 1st rounder tells me he needs another year of MAAA. IMO barring a great camp he is going back down.

Yes, he was a 3rd round pick but should've went late 1st / early 2nd.
Once the first goalie is off the board, it's a domino effect. They start going left, right and centre. It started when Shawinigan took Coloumbe at 35 then Moncton with Lavallee at 40, Brassard at 47 (Quebec), Labrie at 51 (Rimouski), Bucheler at 52 (Halifax).
I know Moncton's plan was to take a goalie at 40 regardless of who was available. They struck gold.

There were a lot of teams in need of a young goalie, the fact that he lasted into the 3rd round tells me that most teams saw something that will require fixing. Usually the top goalies go in the 1st round, 2-3 of them if they are ready to jump in at 16.

Yeah I'm glad they picked up Leclerc if theres a possibility Grametbauers done for a long time. Going into the new building with no proven goaltending would not have been good. Its possible one of them steps up but not something you take on a chance on when trying to attract new fans/keep them coming back.

He went in round 3 but having seen him play, I believe he is ready for the QMJHL. He was the 2nd goalie off the board, just because he went in round 3 doesn’t mean he’s not Q ready though. I’m confident that if you ask others who’ve watched him play, they’ll tell you the same thing. Could he go back to Midget and work on stuff? Of course he could but that’s the case with every goalie drafted. He’s the best goalie I saw this year that was eligible for the draft. He should have been a late 1st/early 2nd round pick, the Wildcats got a steal and he’s better than the options they currently have for that #2 role.
Have you seen the kid play? If you have then you’ll know how talented he actually is and that his draft position doesn’t reflect the level he’s at. He can go back down and it won’t hurt him but he can also play at the Q level, no doubt in my mind.

I think we should give him a good look in Training Camp and go from there.
I don't think we've had a goalie since Crawford play after his draft season. We had him start that season as backup and then by the end of the season he ended up playing almost 40 games when Ruggiero moved on.

At no point would I run with a 16yr old this season and see who’s QMJHL ready...if we start this season 1-6 2-9 0-8 then it’s gonna be a goalie issue if none of these kids are ready, and then if Mark is gonna for long stretch and we need a goalie the price just went up to aquire one in season, grabbing vet in Lecrelc in offseason behind a young Dcore was smart move...
And someteam May want a 20yr old back up for a playoff run..if a team has a young goalie, they’ll want experience in behind him..AB had a 20yr backup, granted they didn’t trade for him BUT teams still may want that...
It’s all moot point until we know more about GB injury and we see goalies at camp

AB had a 19 YO backup. Nobody gets a 20YO as backup. 20YO spots are limited. You want a starting goalie or players that play a regular shift (top 3 lines / top 4 D).
Dickner, Samuel (1999-12-10) King, Ozzie (2000-09-14) Leclerc, Francis (1998-07-02)
Will Dickner or King ever play a regular role with Moncton ?
Dickner is an LW and is 5'8" ... and will be a 19 YO for the 2018-19 season. Dickner had 4 goals and 4 assists in 60 games last year (inc playoffs).
King is a 5'11" Center and will be an 18 YO for the 2018-19 season. He played for the Dartmouth Subways last year as a 17 YO and had good offensive numbers and a good playoff. He had good numbers as a 16 YO in Major midget also. I don't put much stock in offensive numbers from a kid playing Midget as a 17 YO.
I know Leclerc has decent numbers, but unless King makes our roster this year, I think we overpaid for a guy we don't anticipate will be here the whole year. 20 YO temporary goaltenders are a dime a dozen come September/October.
One of my biggest concerns is that in 2019, our draft picks go like this ... 1BAT-4-5-6CHA-8-9-9QC-9RN-10SHA-10-11-13-14. I think I'd like to keep that 3rd ... too late now. Oh well ... we have three 9ths we can rely on.

I would say judging by the price they paid they expect Leclerc to be here for the full season.

Someone posted that Ozzie King is considered a prospect - wouldn't go to B-C last year so he stayed home and played another year of midget. I think he may be a bit bigger than listed as well. To me, Dickner looks like a throw in - add him to Lazure, Blackmore, and Kuzmin as marginal 19 y/o's who will be in tough to hold onto a job with younger players pushing them.
Leclerc is a decent goalie - arguably just as good as Grametbauer ... I am ok with getting him as insurance, if both he and Grametbauer are healthy for the second half, we should be able to move one of them for a pick at Xmas.
