I can only imagine your reaction when Luke Green and Sam Girard went 1st and 3rd overall respectively in the same draft. To be fair, in that same draft Pascal Leberge went 2nd overall ahead of Pierre-Luc Dubois who went 6th

I don’t like the idea of drafting a d-man top 5 overall. Much more risk and development involved. I am inclined to disagree ... I went back and looked at the last five Q drafts ... any d-man drafted top 5 pretty much without exception developed into a stud at this level. I don't think there is much more risk with a d-man than there is with a forward - a guy you are picking top 5 is normally already good enough to step right into a top 4 role as a 16 year old, and grow from there. Yep this is quite the list of top 5 dmen who did not pan out Sam Girard Luke Green Xavier Bouchard Jared McIssac (Noah Dobson @ 6) Max Guenette Lukas Cormier Willam Villeneuve Perhaps later in the draft a dman is slower to develop..but I'd be very happy to add anyone of that quality to the Cats dcore.

I posted this a while back, but it seems to fit right here. This is a list of the past 8 drafts. Top 3 picks in each draft is pretty indicative that teams are well prepared with their scouting departments and you'll get an impact player 1, 2 or 3. 2011 - Nathan MacKinnon, Jonathan Drouin, Guillaume Gauthier 2012 - Daniel Audette, Alexis Pepin, Clark Bishop 2013 - Niclas Roy, Anthony Beauvillier, Nathan Noel 2014 - Luke Green, Pascal Laberge, Samuel Girard 2015 - Joe Veleno, Antoine Morand, Maxime Comtois 2016 - Benoit Groulx, Jared McIsaac, Gabriel Fortier 2017 - Alexis Lafreniere, Samuel Poulin, Jakob Pelletier 2018 - Hendrix Lapierre, William Villeneuve, Mavrick Bourque A lot of really great talent to build a franchise around!

For most of the WC existence, drafting d-men in the top 5 was more risky(Lamontagne Lund etc) looking at the guys drafted the last 6-7 years(2018 draft is too close to judge as is 2017), there are not too many you can call a bust, Green did not really live up to the #1 spot, but he wasn't a bust.

Green did not really live up to the hype ... but he was the consensus #1 back then. Hard to fault Saint John for taking him #1. He seemed to plateau after his 2nd year ... but was very good right out of the box. He has only played 11 AHL games this year ... is he hurt ?

15 .. Titan picked up a single point in Vic but ultimately lost 3 on their road trip.
Depending on how the tie-breaker plays out, the number is actually 14 as SJ has more ROW.

Magic number is now 11 ... but actually it is 10. SJ has 11 ROW while Bathurst has 7. So if they finish tied with SJ is still ahead. But for Bathurst to catch them they'll probably need a few ROW and that could change things.
So we'll stick with 11 for certainty.

SJ and Bat each get a point so magic number drops to 9.
