Maybe he will defect after the wjc. Do they still need to Defect to get out of Russia to play hockey? KGB is watching?

Saint John is 2-3 stud forwards away from being a powerhouse. I feel like one of the most cost effective ways to improve would be to upgrade on there 20's. I'd say the most cost effective way to improve would be the 2nd import spot. I wouldn't completely rule out one of the 20 spots though. package deal with Chicoutimi for Lafrance and Kasilik? Would be 2 huge adds and upgrades on sapelnikov and Innis. With the D core getting deeper this seems like a move that could be made. Add Desnoyers from Halifax and another depth forward, the team will look incredibly strong.

Probly was easier to defect then get out of a khl contract.

Svechkov would look really good in SJ Is there any serious talk that he might actually come? I am sure the Dogs have been in contact with him and his Agent and would love to get him here. If he is playing in the KHL it might be tough getting him here. Especially if he has a decent contact. McCain will need to open up the vault.

Early talks have Saint John acquiring Desnoyers from Halifax. Mostly picks involved with some being sent back at the draft and Cam MacDonald going to the Mooseheads. Cam Russell and Trevor Georgie don't have a great relationship. If the trade doesn't happen, that will be one reason why. Imagining this stems from the Safin deal. That was an ugly situation where clearly Halifax felt like they traded for damaged good and the Sea Dogs hid the full extent of his injuries. Georgie probably not happy they went to the league over the trade so... yea, I can't imagine those two being on the best of terms.

Our Hail Mary is hoping that Nashville signs him, buying out his KHL contract, then sends him here (extremely unlikely but they can't be too happy with the chances he has been getting)

Under contract with st Petersburg not even Nashville can touch him. Has a chl team ever bought out a khl contract?

Maybe having another guy on the team that speaks Russian that can translate for him will help Sapelnikov. It's a long shot but he'll really need to light it up between now and the end of the trade period in my opinion. Otherwise there must be an import forward available for a decent cost that can have more of an impact.

Under contract with st Petersburg not even Nashville can touch him. Has a chl team ever bought out a khl contract? Most KHL contracts have an NHL opt out. Essentially, if a player gets an ELC, there is an immediate option for the NHL team to end the KHL contract. If he is going straight to the NHL, there is no buyout. But if the team wants to assign him, they have to negotiate the buyout. Some KHL teams try to require the player buy out the contract in which case, you end up seeing some really funky crap happen to make things work (like sign him, bring him to Nashville, play him for a couple of weeks to prove that he can't play NHL at 18, then send him down).

Under contract with st Petersburg not even Nashville can touch him. Has a chl team ever bought out a khl contract? The maximum that a team is allowed to pay for the release of a player is 10K domestically (which is why once a kid commits to USNTDP, he can't be bought out by a CHL team). I'm not sure if there is an official number for imports, but there are rules against paying the player to be released (as opposed to the club) which is how Russia usually makes life difficult for players to leave (this wasn't always the case).

Halifax getting their own 2022 1st back and SJ's 1st in 2023 would be a good start. Nobody knows the personal feelings Cam and Trevor have after the Safin debacle, but I wouldn't be surprised if Cam looked elsewhere first and demanded a premium package from SJ. Georgie would have zero leverage in trade talks given their Mem Cup hosts.
