And who is to say Austin didn't go to management and called it quits. Being a 20 year old on a bottom feeder team, after getting traded from a contender, I think that would leave a sour taste in your mouth unless they actually say why he left all comments are on the table honestly I wouldn't be surprised if it went along the lines as trading for him and he came in with a chip on his shoulder due to the fact being traded from a contender to a bottom feeder and didn't put much effort in as you can tell when he was actually playing and Hulton simply said shape up or your gone. Its one thing to have emotion and try to give your team a chance and its another to simply not give a crap and just stop trying.
All honestly something must have went down in all of Hultons years here he never struck me as a guy to screw a player over like that.
I mean he got traded to use over the holidays and played 5 games and trade period was over I doubt Hulton thought when making the deal, hey I am going to get this player here and keep him till after the deadline and let him go. the timing sucks yes nut honestly there wasn't that much time in between.

Just so I’m clear, my post wasn’t in defence of Hulton or any decision he has made this season - it was simply my opinion on letting Austin go. Incase I played a part in the “we can’t criticize Jim Hulton here” feeling. Go Isles!

It's not too often that Hulton has had to rebuild and more than one team have looked to stumble somewhat so I think he can be given some leeway. I would gladly change Dwyer here in Bathurst for Hulton. How can you be serious on that front, Look at Hultons track record with since joining the Islanders and what he has accomplished. I think some people are hitting the panic button way to soon, yes the trades may not make sense in some cases what would have happened if we won last year? would people still be asking questions on the Guy trade? look at what other teams are doing hell look at what the return on Zellweger and Hofer. Honestly Austin didn't really impress me all that much at all overall his numbers were solid cause he had a strong team in front of him. Robillard from what I remember he played pretty good vs us last season and we had a very strong team and he made some big saves during the series vs us, I think he will be a great addition. Rutledge defiantly isn't a surprise watching him all season and the games he has played in he didn't do a whole lot and didn't utilize his size at all. Hes been on the bubble for a little while now. Its the first time really since Hulton took over we are in this position I think his goal this season is to just even make the playoffs and with the team that he had it just is not going to cut it, so if he has to bring in other players to try and achieve that then so be it. If in 2-3 years we are still this bad then yes hit the panic button but overall the first half of the season was not overly bad sitting around 500 or a little above. Mind you a lot had to do with Franky in net but they were still scoring goals and competing. I was referring to his performance in this trade périod. That's all I was referring to. His work over the past seasons speaks for itself.

Do you have any proof of what you say or is it just a love thing you have for Jim?

Hulton has been overall successful and turned this organization around. Hulton has made some questionable moves this season that will and should bring criticism. Both things can be and are true.

I see people saying Hulton has made questionable moves this year, what exactly are those questionable moves?
He brought Rutledge in, he didn’t show enough and they released him. They found Romeo though, who looks like a player. It’s not like the players they brought in cost them assets.
Elliott completed the Lapenna deal. Roy was traded for Allen and a pick essentially, Roy has played 2 games this year so that’s a wash. Tessier came in for a 9th and he’s doing his job for this team. You get Repcik and a pick for Satny, that trade seems like a win or a wash at worst. Hughes comes in for 2 4th’s and it’s early but you might have found something there, he’s always been a talented kid, it just never clicked in Drummondville. You bring in Hinkley for a 3rd and that’s cheap for what he could be, at worst it’s a roster player for 1.5 years and at best he’s here for 2.5 years or dealt next year if he establishes himself.
You could criticize the return for Brabenec or Lapenna but there was no euro/OA goalie market this year. Whether you did it at the draft or waited, there wasn’t a better return to be had. This particular season, those weren’t the types of players in demand. There’s not much you can do about that. You could not like the picks going to Blainville but that’s the cost of going for it. Biakabutuka is having a great season but there’s no market for OA D either, you maybe could have moved him in the summer or for a 3rd now but you don’t know that Trudeau/Guay both wouldn’t be back. I can understand keeping him at this point.
This teams issues are a result of continuous success and playoff runs, there’s really not much you can do about it. It’s fair to criticize the Austin thing, however it went down but I can’t look at the moves he’s made/trades and say he did a bad job.
The reality probably is that expectations from fans were way too high when discussing returns on the Islanders players and now you’re disappointed but the returns seem fair based on the market and what was available to be traded for.

I'll be honest, I only started watching/following the Islander in the 16/17 season so this is my first time seeing a rebuild really. It could very well be my lack of knowledge making me wonder about some things.
I appreciate seeing all the different opinions and learning some things.

There will be a high pick coming to us from Sherbrooke in the Brabenec deal…deal looks bad now, but will look better at the draft.
Not everything is always the way it looks right away. Could also be futures involved with the Lapenna deal, who knows.

There is no proof anywhere in any of these discussions as no one actually knows everything is all speculation until something is released and a topic like this it is hard to say if they will release why the switch. Which by now if nothing has come out I doubt we will hear anything. I am not saying he is a problem kid I was giving a different look on the possibility of the situation, who knows he could have just quit like a few other players across the league has done. You can't sit there and tell me if the final year of your junior career and you were on a contender and then got traded not to another decent team but to a team who will barley make the playoffs and be out in the first round, that you wouldn't be sour. I watched him play since he got here and the effort and battling is just not there regardless of what happen. Don't get me wrong Jim has done great things here and the only thing I am saying is something isn't adding up and some people thing the timing is wrong and bad on his part he just has not shown in all the time he has been here that he would screw over a kid like that, so something else IMO happened for this move and if not then I look at it from the stand point that if your not wanting to play or try then why keep you on the team.

up until last years deadline I could find very little wrong with Hulton's performance as GM
last year I felt we reached on Lapenna but was willing to give the benefit of the doubt..... the deal wound up being quite large and damaging to the organization in hindsight and Lapenna failed in the finals greatly.... but he was an upgrade on what we had and we were going for it so I can understand the trade but still say it was a net loss
it was further aggrivated by keeping Lapenna this year rather than finding a home for him at the draft.... it would have made alot more sense to give Satny the ball this year and see if we had a two year stopgap in net to let Flanagan develop (if the organization was high on him)... and divide the first half starts a bit more equally so young Flanagan wouldn't have completely lost his confidence and perhaps be ruined as a goalie prospect and we wouldn't have had the situation where we had to sell low on Lapenna despite being arguably the top goalie in the league the first half.... we wouldn't have Repcik in that case but despite playing fantastic at the world juniors there has been little evidence he can be more than an average performer in major junior and we would have a high euro pick to add a 17 year old to grow during the rebuild with Satny as a euro overage option
Adding stopgap players who you discard right away in deals just adds to the overall chaos of this season..... there was no reason to add Austin and Frondunto to the Gatineau trade.... especially with no significant high picks coming our way
I don't have a problem with the Brabanec return.... i'll be happy to see future or better draft pick(s) to come.... we were handtied there so he did the best he could given the situation
now the real terrible trade that just became worse and worse............. Zach Roy..... overpaid for him but yeah we were going for it and at the time he was one of the top chips on the market..... if we had given just the picks i'd say fair deal.... adding a prime future was foolish IMO. Guay would easily have been worth more at the draft or at this years deadline if he was playing major junior...... and at the time of the Roy trade noone would have thought he wouldn't be.... however protecting teams is smart business so ya need a plan B.... again William Trudeau seemed fair... and likely to return. The real problem was the plan C.... it should have been Biakabatuka.... instead it was Brabanec. That's why the finalization of that deal had to wait and why we received about 60 cents on the dollar.....
Then you had Ben Boyd..... don't know the story only the rumours. Solid asset to have and lost for nothing because Jim wouldn't deal him to Halifax is the rumour......... should have swallowede his pride and dealt the player would definitely have been able to get 2-3 picks... or a prospect
Net result our supposed rebuild added nobody under 18 and no picks in the first 2 rounds..... no goaltender to step in next year (requiring us to spend draft capital we don't have to address) and nothing on paper that appears to be worth a haul next year during the rebuild
That is poor work in my opinion. Some out of our control and bad luck definitely made things worse but didn't have to back ourselves into the corner we did quite so much either.
Also Dawson Stairs was a terrible acquisition i said it at the time and it proved correct.... another asset wasted we could have potentially gotten some return on
Also won't be surprised if we owe Chicoutimi something for the fact Roy wound up not playing major junior this year.

But PEI Rocket years were not rebuild..... it was 1 step forward, then three steps back. There was never a complete sell off. It was always sell these two veterans for youth, but then pay a premium to add a coveted 19 y/o in hopes that he is a good 20. The building plan never went anywhere. It's really the 1st time this team really had a true rebuild. Some just aren't used to it. Can't argue with much in this. It's a pretty fair summary of everything. In general, when you are building and going all in, you're in an arms race and you pay to get the assets you want, regardless of the price. You hope all your bets pay off, and sometimes they do. A few pucks bounce a different way last June and I think we are reigning Memorial Cup champs.... I honestly believe that to be true. The graduating 19 y/o situation was a real kick in the pills. Most evidence you would collect on undrafted 19 y/o players would point to Guay playing as a 20 this season. Further, examining Montreal's contract situation would provide optimism that Trudeau would be a solid bet to return. Losing both to exiting to pro hockey is not something anyone would have predicted back in the winter. I guess there's still potential to move Ben Boyd. Considering how little he's playing (because University hockey has such a think schedule), I'd be very surprised if he signs an entry level deal and plays pro at 20. But, I'd say there's no chance he plays for us at 20 (he'd be a great fit) and his value as a 20 y/o is very, very little compared to if he was dealt at 19. up until last years deadline I could find very little wrong with Hulton's performance as GM last year I felt we reached on Lapenna but was willing to give the benefit of the doubt..... the deal wound up being quite large and damaging to the organization in hindsight and Lapenna failed in the finals greatly.... but he was an upgrade on what we had and we were going for it so I can understand the trade but still say it was a net loss it was further aggrivated by keeping Lapenna this year rather than finding a home for him at the draft.... it would have made alot more sense to give Satny the ball this year and see if we had a two year stopgap in net to let Flanagan develop (if the organization was high on him)... and divide the first half starts a bit more equally so young Flanagan wouldn't have completely lost his confidence and perhaps be ruined as a goalie prospect and we wouldn't have had the situation where we had to sell low on Lapenna despite being arguably the top goalie in the league the first half.... we wouldn't have Repcik in that case but despite playing fantastic at the world juniors there has been little evidence he can be more than an average performer in major junior and we would have a high euro pick to add a 17 year old to grow during the rebuild with Satny as a euro overage option Adding stopgap players who you discard right away in deals just adds to the overall chaos of this season..... there was no reason to add Austin and Frondunto to the Gatineau trade.... especially with no significant high picks coming our way I don't have a problem with the Brabanec return.... i'll be happy to see future or better draft pick(s) to come.... we were handtied there so he did the best he could given the situation now the real terrible trade that just became worse and worse............. I kinda feel similarly to bois here. One thing with me is looking around the league and seeing how many ex-islanders there are who are good assets or even key pieces on other teams... you should have more to show for that IMO. Justin Gill, Angus Booth, Mathis Aguilar, Sam Oliver, Drew Elliot, Oscar Plandowski, Anthony Hamel, Jacob Goobie *I guess*... even Xavier Fortin to a degree. Yes, many of these guys were moved for pieces that played very well for the Islanders, but... some also wreak of impatience. I know Jeremie Biakabatuka is a good player and the Charlottetown Islanders defense was ridiculously deep... but follow that trade chain. Angus Booth, 2004 D, QMJHL Captain, NHL-Drafted top 2 D was traded for a 2nd round pick 2 years down the road... which was then packaged with Mathis Aguilar, another 2004 D, and yet another 2nd AND a 3rd.... for Biakabatuka and an 8th was it? When viewed like that that asset management is inexcusable. Especially since Booth played on the team that beat the Islanders in the playoffs last year, it's not like he couldn't have played a key role on the Islanders blueline instead of Biakabatuka. Imagine how much better the Islanders look with Booth and Aguilar anchoring their D for the next 1-2.5 years, with the option of trading them for assets, plus that 2024 2nd? Some of his trades were justified, like yea Gill and 2x 1st for Patty Guay is A LOT... but it's also 1.5 (and at the time they thought 2.5) years of Patty fuckin' Guay. The guy put up 55 goals and 104 points, anyone gives you a pass on that trade. Xavier Simoneau was also 2 more firsts out the door but... It's also Xavier Simoneau. But at the same time like... Bailey Peach? There's another 2 2nds, a 3rd and a 7th out the door for 7 goals and 17 points. Hulton hasn't put himself in a position where he can draft well because he doesn't have picks, and he hasn't been able to fleece anyone in a trade since he picked up Laaouan and desruisseaux
