Everything i see on Richard suggests we made a great pick there. He has the right attitude and should be a strong candidate for our blue line. Biakabutuka was a WTF moment. There is no reason for him to have been available that late. He should also be a strong competitor to take one of our ble line spots this year. Bellemare can bring something this year, but he is the type of fw we would normally send back so he can be the guy. All in all, seemed like a good draft. We will have spots open at camp, but it remains to be seen who steps up to fill them. A Patella, for example, would improve our depth a lot Well hopefully Biakabutuka turns out to be one of those guys that teams regret passing on. Was he hinting NCAA? Seems strange that he would fall to the 10th round. My best guess is that teams see his brother with less offensive upside and drafted potential offense over that. That being said, his brother is a heck of a d regardless of his offense.

Do you have information on Simek and Mateiko. Are they coming to St John?

Do you have information on Simek and Mateiko. Are they coming to St John? I cant speak to the players, but other than the hail Mary Svechkov pick, SJ has always had deals with their imports before picking them. Simek is one of the 14 fw on the Czechia preliminary roster for the Hlinka starting July 31. No idea about Mateiko. Sj doesn't exactly have a great track record with imports, but I'm willing to take a wait and see approach.

except for Ostap Safin who they "broke" The Safin and Salda draft was SJ's best yet. Umm Galiev and Jurco would say otherwise. Especially given that we avoided the Kabanov trap as well in that same draft. After they picked Galiev and Kabanov was still there, I wanted Kabanov and admittedly was PISSED when they passed on him a second time and picked Jurco. Thank God they did.

They were taken 1st and 4th and required trades. Safin and Salda were taken with late picks. Galiev/Jurco were the best Euro duo, but I consider Safin/Salda better picks. The thing about Simek/Mateiko that is causing me to hold out some hope is that I haven't seen any question marks at all. Simek should play in the Hlinka and Mateiko likely wasn't far from playing in the 2022 WJHC redux.

Galiev and Jurco was our best Import Draft yet. Positioning doesn't matter. That would be like saying our 2014 QMJHL draft was better than our 2009 QMJHL draft. In 2014 we got Kyle Ward and Blade Mann Dixon in rounds 9 and 11 respectively and thats some great value right there. In 2009 we got Durepos and Huberdeau but those were first rounds picks and we had to make trades to get the Huberdeau pick and use fake NCAA holdout threats to get the players to fall into our laps, so it doesn't count.

Every time I feel like I understand the drafting, import rules, odd trade negotiations of the QMJHL, I realize I have no idea about any of it. Fake NCAA holdout threats? It can't be easy to be a GM/Owner of a team in the CHL.

Every time I feel like I understand the drafting, import rules, odd trade negotiations of the QMJHL, I realize I have no idea about any of it. Fake NCAA holdout threats? It can't be easy to be a GM/Owner of a team in the CHL. The league creates a lot of the problems by keeping everything secretive around player compensation. All we really know is that about 10 years ago they basically killed the bigger markets from spending their money on their players. Players like Radulov and Americans like Erne and Sharrow didn't stop coming here because the Q isn't a viable option...the league basically turned everyone into a small market team in terms of how they can spend on players. Now they wonder why fans are apathetic in so many markets yet cutting down on talent came at the same time as cutting out a huge portion of the entertainment as the sport evolved away from fighting and really changed its image at the lower levels like this. Add in the sport expanding to 2 refs meant the more incompetent ones stick around longer than they should and all those items combined with coming out of a pandemic with soaring inflation are all 100% why a Patrick Roy in 2022 has to go into the media and beg fans to go to their playoff games.
