Can't see Carkner sticking past 48hrs......but I think he would be a great addition as a 16yr old.
Mossey will not escape his injuries and unfortunately they will kill his career.
Question is, will Bowness make the team this season?
I say, no.

Great update! Looking forward to see Butler this year. Game 1 of the Cusson Cup completed. Thrilling competition. Going to be a fun camp. Website has an article but some details are inaccurate. Did not participate: Lucas Romeo, Jarrett Todd, Nathan Mossey, Jeremy Dumas, Ondrej Maruna 5-5 in regulation. Black goals: Giovanni Morneau, Will Allen (from Corbin Carkner), Kevin Walker, Marcus Kearsey (from Edouard Vincent), Sheldon Rankin (from Mathis Valente & Giovanni Morneau) White goals: Simon Hughes, Simon Duguay, Lane Hinkley, Alexis Michaud, Kiefer Lyons (from Cole Huckins) Shootout (Flanagan for black, Carter for white): Black - Morneau (stopped), Kearsey (stopped) White - Huckins (goal), B. Arsenault (goal) Team Black standouts: Giovanni Morneau (MVP; better be a lock for the overage group), Michael Horth, Will Allen, Corbin Carkner, Kevin Walker, Mathis Valente, Owen Conrad, Zackary Plamondon, all four goalies (MVP was Rylan Aitken) Team White standouts: Simon Hughes (MVP), Robbie Rutledge, Matthew Butler, Kyle Powers, Nolan Avery, Lane Hinkley, Jack McMinn, Simon Duguay, Aksels Ozols, Jack Carter (G MVP) Not-so-positive standouts (anyone not mentioned was okay/neutral): Alexis Michaud, Kian Bell, Anthony Flanagan, Jake Doherty, Kenzie Wagner, Charles Wilson More notes: - Morneau and Horth were the overage stand-outs... Huckins and Bell were meh - Michaud has a heck of a shot but his skating and energy were lackluster - Kearsey and Topilnyckyj had a rough start as a pairing, but they rebounded in the third - Carkner gave Michaud a good hit in the corner; both Michaud and Hughes gave him a couple whacks and cross-checks seconds after - A few players were great offensively but were easy to hit (Lyons, Valente, A. Flanagan were examples) - A few players were great physically but lacked everywhere else (Wagner, Siefker were examples) - If Jack Carter is reassigned and has a growth spurt, he could be in line for something next year.. many great saves today and denied two top players in the shootout Friendly reminder, just game one. Everything said could do a complete 360 tomorrow with two more games. Lots of players with potential, but need to show more. Things will make more sense once we learn who chooses the university/college route.

Over all a great game 1! š

Hoping for a solid season from Lyons.
He has the skill...just needs to round out his overall game.
Anyone been to the scrimmage this morning with any recap?

Also, just because they signed and brought Bell to camp as a 20, does not guarantee him a spot on the team.
They signed him to have his rights before someone else could grab him...
Our 3 20's could easily be:
Horth Huckins Morneau
All depends on how Bell looks...

I was at the morning session today. It was the first time in a few years that I was able to get to an intrasquad game in camp. I didn't have a pen to take detailed notes and had my kids with me, so I wasn't able to really drill down on individual players. Also, I had to leave before the game was over. They play two 25 min stop time periods and I left with about 15 minutes remaining in the 2nd period.
Of the new players, I was probably most impressed with Butler. He's got great hands and really good speed. You can see he has the skill to step into the league right away. He's definitely small, but I think he has a really bright future in the league.
Conrad comes as advertised... he's very calm and poised. He looks more like a veteran guy on the blueline rather than a raw rookie. They had him playing his off side with Kearsey as his partner.
When you watch these guys they are all really talented but you can see that they are at the beginning of some important development years.
Many of the players could be categorized as:
A - impressive size but with the goal to be improving their skating and puck retrieval skills
or
B - showing a cut above in terms of talent and skating but need to show some physical growth to be ready to play in the league.
There was a scary play very early when Romeo got clipped by Landon Ryan. It wasn't a cheap shot, but Romeo was trying to bull his way through the middle and Ryan caught him with a shoulder right to the jaw. If a real game, Ryan likely would face supplementary penalties for getting him in the head, but it was one of those hits that can be hard to control in the middle of the action. Romeo went down hard, tried to get up and then went down again. I would guess he was out cold after the hit. He went off on his own and was bloodied. Obviously you have concern over a concussion following something like that. I'm sure they will sit Romeo down for a while and make sure he is good and healthy before getting back on the ice.
I thought Morneau looked the best of the 20s. His motor was running and he is a guy who is very relentless on the forecheck.
Topilnyckyj had confidence to get involved offensively and scored a nice goal on a pretty passing play.
Corbin Carkner shows very well for a 16 y/o player. He has great size and is a good skater. Carkner was getting a "push" playing alongside Morneau and Bowness early on. It will be crunch time on a decision in the next 24 hours for both Carkner and the team. We know Jim well enough that the common development path is the slow play. Some guys start with our program at 16, but a really common on ramp comes in the player's 17 y/o season after a year to improve in minor hockey following his draft year. I would expect that the Islanders would be really careful about offering a spot to 16 y/o Carkner and Carkner's family would be equally hesitant to burn the NCAA eligibility right away.
Remember, Carkner's not the typical New England kid who gets drafted to the Q. Many of the guys drafted now from the New England states likely have heard very little of the QMJHL, major junior, or many of the teams in our league. Carkner is from Connecticut, but as the son of an ex-pro, his family would be better aware of both the pros and the cons of major junior. His dad played in the OHL, and he probably spent at least some of his youth living in Ontario.
Carkner definitely looks like he can play in this league. If when all is said and done he is back to the US for this season, hopefully he comes up for another look again next year.... and maybe he does choose major junior hockey as his pathway.
Nathan Weber was a guy who looked really speedy, tenacious, and skilled..... showed very nicely for an 11th round selection.
Allen also had some impressive moments. He is one of the better skaters on the ice and plays with a physical edge. He did have a great half season in junior A, so maybe he comes back this year as a regular player for us.

Very true.... The Guardian article this weekend revealed that the deal for Huckins was something that developed very recently.... sometimes plans change. Also, how has the Latvian netminder looked so far? For the one game I caught, very poised, good movement, and made one hell of a save at one point. Think he let in one or two goals, but I'm pretty sure his vision was blocked. Fingers crossed someone has more positive things to say after today's games.
