Lots of rough stuff today at the game, they really need to cut Herr loose before he injures one of our players with those cheap shots. Maybe its the fact that he realizes he isn't going to make the team that has him all riled up. Too much fighting between the team for my liking but I guess it goes to show how competitive it is. Tolles seems to have developed a little bit of a temper as well. Wasn't much of a game offensively but Matt Brown had a nice goal in the shootout and there was a few good hits.

Anyone Stood out the most ? I like #5 Baca on defense, looks like a solid euro. He's got pretty good size and has confidence with the puck, the only slip up was a little mistake at the end that cost his team a 2 on 1. Lincourt stood out as a forward with some nifty moves, Marquardt was pretty quiet. I hope Lamoureux stays as a tough guy he is pretty physical and moves well also. Other than that it wasn't much of a game, the players seemed more focused on getting revenge than scoring.

I think that they looked very tired. 8 games in 5 days for the rookies and some of the vets didn't look very interested IMO. I thouhgt that it was a pretty sloppy game but I think it will be different tonight. As for the revenge part I think the coach's told them to knock it off between the 2nd and 3rd periods. Lincourt, Eagles and Brannon looked pretty good. Lincourt worked hard all game which is good to see.

I caught the afternoon scrimmage today and I found it much better than yesterdays. The veterans seem to be picking it up but there's still not much for physical play. The one thing I noticed is that other than Herr and maybe Little, all the defensemen seem very comfortable with puck possession and all seem to be very confident at the point, even the free agents and rookies like Wilson, Miceli, Gomes etc. Miceli in particular impressed me today, he definitely seemed in his element but I still can't see him challenge for mor than 7th or 8th defenseman. With Barberio, Pianosi, Baca all locks and Dimitruk if he stays, I don't think it would be a bad idea to acquire a solid defensive defensman for the PK and for tough match-ups with opposing top lines.
Baca was even more impressive than when i saw him last and I really think the fans will like him. He seems to be a solid do-it-all defenseman who doesn't really excel at anything but still delivers in all areas. I would have expected him to seem a bit shy or maybe intimated being it's his first time in Canada and he doesn't know any of the players, but he's very much comfortable and looks to be enjoying himself. I think he'll bring more to the table than Bartulis did as an 18yr old.
Something I noticed is that Barberio and Pianosi seem to be taking after their D partners from last year. Barberio is becoming a not overly physical but positionnaly sound and defensively responsible D man that likes to rush the puck but doesn't get too risky, just like A Mac but Pianosi seems to have that almost slow-mo skating stride and tries to make fancy dekes around everyone and pinch in deep quite a bit like Welton. I don't think I have to say which I prefer. I had good hopes for Pianosi when he heavily improved in the second half but I think Dimitruk and Barberio could overshadow him a bit. But I still don't want to put too much into a few scrimmages, maybe Pianosi is just "fooling around" with all the rookies and inexperienced players in the scrimmages.
Goyens is still Goyens. I seriously have no idea how he's in major junior hockey right now. He still hasn't figured out the icing rule (I thought they taught that in mini mites) and he can't put a pass on the tape or even remotely close to the blade. If he's a 19 yr old defenseman on your team, it's because you're very desperate for bodies. Torchetti and co know a lot more than me but I just can't figure out what they saw in him.
Dimitruk played the best I've seen him yet and he's already adjusted pretty well to the level of play. I can see him making an impact right away if he wants to stay. It would be very significant if he signs cause he's only 17 and would be a stud on the blue line for at least 3 years.
The line of Lessard, Lincourt and Cameron was very fun to watch. Lincourt usualy tried to coast-to-coast it everytime he got the puck in his own zone and it worked about half the time. Lessard scored two goals and they were both beauty shots. He's really developed his shot since last year. His skating is still a bit ugly but he seems a lot stronger on the puck than he was last year, although he's playing against rookies so I wouldn't say that for sure until the season starts.
Marquardt and Eagles showed great chemistry and were basically doing whatever they wanted out there. Stephens did an o.k job of keeping up with them but I still can't see him on the team with the surplus of forwards. Eagles and Marquardt will do some serious damage in the league if they play together.
As I said in the projected lineup thread, Brenton was one of the best players out there despite not having the greatest linemates (although I think he played with Sill for some shifts). He was everywhere on the ice creating turnovers and good scoring chances but in good Brenton fashion, he couldn't finish them.
Blain is very impressive for a rookie 17 yr old from Midget AAA. I'd go as far as saying there'd be a spot for him if there wasn't already 15 forwards that will either make the team or play somewhere else in this league. He definitely needs to fill out though.
The funniest moment of the game came at the end when somebody finally stood up to Herr. Matt Furlotte shoved him some and basically started the fight himself. He even got Herr's helmet off without losing his, however he forgot to take his gloves off. So after Herr starting punching and Furlotte still had his gloves on, I thought maybe he realized he was in over his head and just wanted to get out of it but then he got in the typical crouching with his fists in front of him position but he still had his gloves on. There was some laughs from the crowd and then finally he realized his gloves were still on so he dropped them and then took his own helmet. Big mistake because Herr proceded to pummel him and it was pretty clear that Furlotte probably never fought in his life. I stil give him credit cause he's the first guy to really stand up to Herr that I saw.
As for the goalies, just by the score of 7-2 red (before the shooutout) you can pretty much tell what the story was. Bolduc played for team white and had a lot of troubles. He comes out of his net but he doesn't cover his angles and leaves way too much open net. Blain benifited from one of those instances to shoot one in the top corner that maybe wasn't as hard as it looked. Dupuis played for team red and seemed pretty reliable. He couldn't really do anything on Marquardt's goal who was left alone in front of the crease with all the time in the world. He was good in the shootout too and even though most team white shooters tried to shoot instead of deke, none of them could find any open space.

The players that stood out for me tonight were:
Miceli - I think it's the first time that I've seen him play & I liked what I saw from him.
Brenton - He was all over the ice. At the start of camp, I was thinking he might be the odd man out, he still might be, but he's giving them a run for their money. The way he's playing, I hope they do keep him.
Cameron - Played really well. He put on a few pounds over the summer & he's a bit more solid on his feet. Played really well.
Lessard - Noticed him almost everytime he was on the ice. Him & Cameron seemed to play well together.
Bolduc - Didn't have a very good game. He stood out to me, not in a good way though ..
Dimitruk - I really hope this kid decides to stick with Moncton. He's getting better & better.
Baca - Solid. Looks like a really good pick. Look forward to seeing more of him.
Marquardt - Had a good game. Seemed he dropped some weight over the summer, which is good.
Blain - Played good. Has got some skills.

Another fan and myself were discussing this tonight:
Maybe Herr is just around at this point to get the others going. It obvious he's not making the team, so maybe he's just here to see who has the nerve to take him on? He's been in alot of other player's faces so far... and he's the only one to really do that... and we all know he's not the only person in camp that would be willing to drop 'em...
Just a thought... maybe Firlotte finally standing up to him was the best thing that could happen. Maybe that goes a long way towards Firlotte gaining a roster spot (he's impressed me a fair amount so far).
As for Herr... in theory, he should've dominated that fight. He's 19... Firlotte is 17. Firlotte has nowhere near the experience Herr has at fighting... I'd be willing to venture that that was Firlotte's first fight, or one of his first.
Herr didn't dominate the fight though. He earned absolutely zero points by doing what he did. All he proved is that he couldn't gain a clear win over an inexperienced 17 year old non-fighter. That's saying something.
EDIT - Oh yes... and Brousseau STILL looked better than Herr tonight... and Matthew Breton now officially has the best hands of any junior player who is physically incapable of scoring.

Today's Game
Tolles- Definitely on the bubble to make team, I find he tries to do too much and thinks he's Yandle for 2 yrs ago...
Dimitruk- Solid D, hopefully he'll stick around...
Mangan- Invisible in my opinion
Bezak - Was this his 1st game? thought he got better as game went on...
Brown - Can't see him making club eventhough he's our 1st rd pick this yr...
Marquardt - Hat Trick, enough said, looks like he's slimmer, hopefully he stays around for the whole yr...
Baca- Big Guy, looks like he'll be a good D for us in next couple of yrs....
Lessard - I think he'll be our most improved guy from last yr, I think he'll be a good all around player...
Brenton- GReat game, hopefully he can finish a lil more this year and is more consistent...
Cameron - Best player on ice, seems like getting drafted motivated him & looks like he put weight on & got stronger..
Lamoureux - Like this guy, hope he makes team, solid bang & crash guy that won't be afraid to drop the gloves...

Probably as part of the agreement to convince him to play in Moncton ? It would be a shame though to let someone go who could be set for a good year (i.e. Brenton, watson) for someone who might not be ready yet.
