I of course have no problem with this kid, I don't know him. Also I am not firmly for or against the NCAA BLUFF.
But for any team taking him now would not be fair to the NCAA, the other Q teams, the Drakkar if they dont pick him. It has become a mess, and he should be pulled from the draft.
Basically Matheson saids he wants to go NCAA......Baie Comeua could pick him he probably wont report. Kinda not fair to the Drakkar.

Now thats not fair to any team besides the Drakkar.
This is way out of hand, and too much bad press over one pick. I say the kid must go out of the draft. Not a big story right now, but what happens when the kid in this situation is a Crosby like player. The Q will look like a circus.

Why can't the kid change his mind? Should 5th rounders who want to play NCAA not allowed to be drafted either?
Nobody's forcing teams to pick the kid....for every Matheson there's 100 kids who want to play in the Q.

I think declaring for the draft will cause some players who would consider the Q but only for certain clubs to declare NCAA. This wouldn't be great for the league as some top talent would be lost.
What about a system that includes compensatory picks for players who choose not to report? Have a supplemental round after the first round for any teams who had a first round pick last year decide not to report.
This way, players can bluff all they want, but a team like Baie Comeau can call the bluff of a guy like Matheson, knowing that if he does go USHL, they'll have the 19th overall pick next year, on top of their own 2011 1st. If a supplemental pick is awarded and used, and then Matheson shows up in Baie Comeau after the 2011 draft, they foirfeit their 2012 2nd rounder.
These details are just off the top of my head, but I think this kind of system could allow the kids the flexibility to make the right choice for them, and provide small market teams some protection from the purported "games" being played.

If your 1st round pick doesn't show up, you can relinquish his rights at either of the next 2 drafts and receive a compensatory pick. |

What if Moncton takes him if he is still on the table in the 3rd Rd ... did Moncton pull a fast one ... or did they just decide to take a gamble on the best kid available in the draft ?

Too many loopholes in the current system to change any aspect of it seriously imo. That's why you make the declaring bit only for their 16 year old season. Someone will use a late pick to take them their 2nd time through the draft. The problem with 'declaring' for a Q draft from what I understand, is that declaring for a draft in a league that is considered 'professional' by the NCAA, makes you ineligible for the NCAA. Any player that does that is seriously compromising their bargaining power with the Q team that drafts them. The trick to fixing anything with the draft is to put the onus on the teams, not the players. |

You say a name of NHL player that went the NCAA route I will give you a bigger one that went the Q or CHL route.

It's not as cut and dry as you make it sound. It's not that it makes the Q "unappealing" it's that the kids who are legitimately on the fence entering the draft.... guys like Logan MacMillian, or FP Guenette, Jim Sharrow..... will almost all opt out of the draft, because they simply don't know. Most of these kids don't give this decision their full focus until their year is over, which basically gives them 4-6 weeks to decide the next 4-6 years of their life. Some of these guys, really aren't sure. Even Mike Cichy was on the fence at the time the Mooseheads picked him. Cichy ended up telling the Mooseheads "yes" at the time of the draft, but then changed his mind a month later. Those are the kids the Q will lose on. Not so much the Andrews, or Bishops who are 100% QMJHL, just using NCAA to dictate money or team benfits. I have no doubt you can name a CHL player for every NHL player..... there's roughly 1500 or so players in the CHL, and roughly 400 kids playing NCAA Div. 1 (serious programs only.... 17 by my count) to pick from. You should be able to name a lot more than 1 for 1. |

I see your point and this whole circus could be ended if the league would just follow the OHL and WHL and have a bantam draft instead of midget. It isn't going to end the NCAA bluff but I gives team extra time to convince a player and his family. If they make players declare for the draft like the NCAA does with it's student atheletes you could see a lot of good talent opt out and then sign as a Free Agent to the team of their choice in any of the 3 leagues. |
