I'm sure Courteau is getting pressure from the small markets and he is doing what he can...but at the end of the day putting in rules to prevent all"NCAA" players would be a big blow to the Q as half of them would end up USHL or in the OHL at 18. Kids that are stars at 15 will always have other options, you can't put a rule in place that prevents that. Guess this is far fetched and may cause more problems. But after the draft could you have another small draft with all kids who have stated NCAA commitment. Than Shawigan Halifax whoever could have a shot at taking the player they want. Once you say you have NCAA commitments you go into the other smaller draft. Far fetch but worth a thought. But guess there would be ways to manipulate that draft too. Ah yes ... so Halifax could pick Ciampini in the regular draft ... and then pick Matheson in the NCAA draft ... that seems fair ... they get two top rated players for their one pick.

Every year we have this stupid discussion ... there are a bunch of yahoos on here that call these 15 YO kids liars ... as if they have some inside information on their decisions. I take offense to that ... and the rules on this board I believe prohibit comments like that about these players. Suggesting that a teenager has committed a fraud breaks the rules and I hope the Mods will put a stop to it soon. Suggesting that is either slanderous or libelous ... can't remember which word applies ... but feel free to pick the correct one.
The problem here is that these kids have options ... and taking the Q closes the door on the NCAA option. At 15 these kids don't have actual offers from NCAA schools ... they have discussions and letters of intent ... but nothing locked in that says how much they'll get ... and then they'd have to probably make the team and stay healthy to hold onto what they might be in line to get. Q teams suddenly offer a full ride scholarship to a Canadian or US school ... and they have something tangible in hand ... compared to promises that might not materialize from the NCAA ... suddenly the offer in hand starts to look more interesting.
Nobody can prove that any of these kids have lied. All you can say is that something changed their mind from their pre-draft stance. It is amazing how an actual contract and accompanying cheque in hand can suddenly change the families outlook ... the guarantees are now there that they can't get (at 15) from the NCAA schools. Which one do you tell your kid to accept ?

Shawi picked him in the hopes if they get the Mem Cup, they would be able to lure him to report. I'm sure having a brand new rink and not being far from home won't hurt.

It is written defamation so its libel... and totally agree with you, kids should have the ability to have a say on where they go as this decision affects the rest of their lives.

Not sure if you know how the draft worked this year, but only way that Halifax could get Mathheson in this so called "NCAA Draft" would be if Lewiston did not want him. Lewiston picked first not Halifax. So yes it would be fair. About as fair or deserved as Shawigan getting him.

Here is a question...can you list any other kids who wanted to go NCAA this draft? Like say over 200??? Having the regular draft with over 200 eligible players makes sense...having an NCAA draft with 3 eligible players makes ZERO sense.

Shawi picked him in the hopes if they get the Mem Cup, they would be able to lure him to report. The funny thing about all of this pissing and moaning over Matheson by Halifax fans, is Halifax was taking Matheson with the 28th pick. Once he was gone, they went with Desmarais, who was the next best defenceman on their list. They also have a deal with Ashley, and had a deal with Brennan who they planned on taking as well, but he went before they could.

They didn`t have a deal with him though. They were just doing what Shawinigan did. Figured at that point, it was worth it to have him on their protected list.

I don't see how Corteau expects big market teams like Halifax, Moncton, Quebec, SJ, etc to sit around and not take a gamble on a player that is going NCAA. Shawinigan took the risk- 99.9% sure they didn't have a deal with him, but if Halifax had taken him at #19, it would have been mayhem. In fact, it would have been better for Halifax to get Ciampini and a crack at Matheson, and it would have happened because Corteau scared everyone away from picking him in Rd 1. Obviously that senario didn't play out, but it could have. Then Halifax would try to lure Matheson to the Q, and if successful, all of a sudden, the league is investigating- all for nothing.
Corteau is an idiot, and this won't work.

From what I hear, Shawinigan started their recruitment process with Matheson and his family today. Let's see how far this goes.
