Interesting quote buried in this article considering all the talk of the team wanting to spend. The curious part is that I am told by many close to the action that Shapiro, at this moment in time does not have a budget for the upcoming season.
Why is that?
There appears to be some friction between those responsible for shareholder value and one Edward Rogers. Some believe that the family wants to win badly and recognizes this is the time to strike. The story goes that those with offices on Jarvis are putting up quite a fight.

it's a nice add for Toronto. They still have a lot of work to do in the rotation to compete with the top AL teams.

Sounds like this could be the start of the dominos. Brantley now reportedly close to signing with the Jays, and rumours of Toronto then shipping Gurriel to Colorado for German Marquez. Rockies also have huge hole in catching and the Jays have lots of depth there.

Why peddle Young Talent that is Salary Controlled for at least the next 3-4 years ? Couldn't the Money given to Brantley brought in a #3 Type Starter ?

Why peddle Young Talent that is Salary Controlled for at least the next 3-4 years ? Couldn't the Money given to Brantley brought in a #3 Type Starter ? Because that's usually how teams finish off contending teams. By upgrading the roster and usually making a tough decision or 2 alone the way with someone thats come through the system. Brantley and Springer were basically a package deal. The Jays laughed at the thought of adding both 3 days ago. Now they get to use the strength in their lineup to fill another hole. Gurriel UFA 2025 and say 2 solid prospects for say Springer signed for 6, Brantley signed for 3, and a Marquez type of starter is a deal any Jays fan would do.

Brantley deal now being refuted. Two things possible. The physical is not a slam dunk given Brantley’s age and injury history. Or the agent leaked it as a 3 year deal to try and leverage other teams to up their offer.
And as to the other post... the young talent can’t all play. It’s widely speculated that the Jays will be a player in the deep FA SS class next year moving Bo to 2B. Carlos Correa being very close friends with Springer and Brantley. If/when the Jays sign a FA SS next year, Cavan Biggio has no home. They have Austin Martin now blocked in CF by Springer. If they shift Springer to RF then Teoscar is out. Gurriel and Grichuk can’t both play LF and Grichuk is a negative asset in a trade.
So Martin now is a 3B, and they also have Jordan Groshans at 3B. Orelvis Martinez is a bit younger but gets Beltre type comps in the system too. They have 5 OFers on the roster who are everyday guys. 9 OFers on the 40 man. 5 catchers on the 40 man and assuming Brantley gets done, they need to move 3 players to make room for Yates, Brantley and Springer. There are trades coming.
A guy like Marquez is 25 and signed and controllable for about 10-15 million less than he’d get on the open market. His road splits also suggest ace potential. Why are you going to throw money at an aging arm like Tanaka, Odorizzi, Paxton.... when you HAVE to trade guys anyway?
Adding a young controllable player for the rotation allows them to be big in free agency again next year.

Not saying it’s not true just I have been following and looking up Jays rumours all off season and this is the first time I seen this rumour. Just because the Brantley whatever that was didn’t happen doesn’t mean Gurriel can’t still be moved.

That what I’m talking about though. Marquez is the trade I’m talking about. I don’t like the idea of Story personally. He’s a good player but for me if they were going to trade for a SS I was Lindor or stay with Bo guy. I don’t know what others think here to but I just don’t get the love for Bauer. The money that’s being reported that he’s asking is to much for him IMO. He had one great year. One again IMO he’s not an ace but a number 2 maybe but definitely a number 3 guy. If it’s come across as bashing him I’m not I just don’t have him as high as others. I need to add IMO Walker and him side by side stats there isn’t more ch of a gap. Especially if you take away last year stays. So if you look at it that way why isn’t there a huge out cry to get Walker back. I don’t know this for sure but from what I’ve read I think you could get Walker for 4yrs and a third of what they gave Springer.
