There is talk that goalies might not count towards OA's next year...imagine that...the Cats could keep Pataki!!! The article is coming out in AN tomorrow... Sarcasm aside that could potentially be quite huge for the Cats if it comes to fruition.

The purpose of that was to help develop goaltenders for Hockey Canada.

That being said, I'm against the rule change for Euro goalies. There were not enough to hurt the development of Canadian goalies.

Sure ... but they are no longer of interest to Hockey Canada as 20 yr olds. I didn't like the import rule either. This rule would have to be CHL wide and you would probably see more than half of all CHL team have 20 yr old goaltender if it was implemented. That probably eliminates the chances of 16 and 17 yr olds getting in as a backup, and that will clearly hurt their development. This would seem to be a stupid move.

You can argue that playing at the MAAA or Jr.A level at 16 or 17 is better for a goalie's development unless he is elite...in which case, teams will make room for them anyways...

I don't think that 2 extra years of MAAA is good for a talented goaltender. The very good ones should be moved to a higher level at 16 where they can get better coaching. The problem with Jr A is that they aren't very interested in developing a 16 YO goaltender who will be gone in a year unless that kid is the best option they have. However, if Major Jr is going to be keeping many 20 YO goaltenders then there may be more call for a 16-17 YO backup in Jr A. But again, they'd be developing a goaltender with full knowledge that he is expected to play Major Jr in a year ... so how much development would he actually get.

That's why I said the elite ones should jump to the Q...if you read my post. there will be less 20 year olds in Jr.a which opens up spots for 16 and 17 year olds.

The elite goalies are going to make the jump no matter what... this rule wouldn’t really keep any of those guys out of the league. At 17, possibly at 16 but at 17, anyone that’s talented enough will find a spot. Basically it’ll stop the mediocre, 17/18/19 year olds that maybe shouldn’t be in the legaue and need more development to get it. It may even produce more goalies, guys need to play and goalies take a little longer to hit their stride, you see lots of Jr. A goalies get drafted and go onto the NHL/NCAA ranks.
I’m not a fan of the rule but i can see where it could help guys out.

BBA relinquished their rights to Bucheler and got a 1st round pick as compensation. You’re right. They traded that pick to VDO to move down a few picks and ended up with Felix Lafrance. Used in part of the package for Batherson.

I really hope Halifax gets the Mem Cup bid, because if the Cats do, then RKI and Shannon will destroy the future of this team for the next 6 years in a half ass attempt to build a winner.
