The difference maker in the series was the third period. I found we constantly took our foot off the gas in the third and it was enough for Shawinigan to find life and get back into the games.
All we can do now is support the rebuild. Sadly technology doesn't exist where we can go back and fix the third period collapses.
Enjoy your summer everyone!

This Islanders franchise had a range of talented players over the past few years.
Losing a person like #10 though is a tough pill to swallow.
Other then his obvious hockey skill.......he was the ultimate leader of this team.....for the past 5 years.
He was and always will be, Mr. Charlottetown Islander.
We'll miss you Brett.
P.E.I thanks you for all that you have contributed to this team and to our community.
Best of luck.

There is actually 2 numbers that should go to the rafters #10 and as well #73 , welsh has done more then just play nets he was so involved in the community. Both players on and off the ice were very well liked and will be greatly missed.

Welsh was at every Finals game in Charlottetown. He also wasn't afraid to cheer for the team (another former player was there and didn't even clap when they scored lol). Welsh and Budgell were not only huge for the team but huge for the community as well. Both dedicated a lot of their extra time to trying to make a difference. The impact of the loss is huge.
It was nice to see so many of the former players at the game yesterday, I think that speaks highly of the organization.
Still so heartbroken for this team. I really, really thought they could do it.

I think a big part of that was extra size for Shawinigan, they have two big bruising D, Bourgault Nadeau and a few other of their top 6 are big. Cha looks smaller in their top 6 and top 4, they were quicker but Sha controlled the high danger areas a lot and got better as the games went on.

Sea Dogs fan here.
You guys had the team to join us at the Memorial Cup. But the game isn’t won on paper, it’s won on the ice. Just like we discovered when we lost to Rimouski. The difference between us and you is that we get a second chance. I truly wish you guys did too. Broken heart for you over how this turned out.
Congrats on a great season. The PEI franchise is doing it right. I’m looking forward to my next trip over there for a game. Cheers 🍻

I don't foresee anybody wearing #73 again.... it's not like it's a common number anyways lol i'm not really much for retiring junior numbers but i'm certainly all about having a Matt Welsh appreciation night in the future as well as a Brett Budgell one a retirement has to be a really exceptional situation for me

I didn't see the whole series but Shaw had goaltending issues. Lapenna wasn't great but I think he outplayed Coulombe.

There isn't much Lapenna can do when our defense is constantly leaving guys like Bourgault and Bourque wide open. By the time they realized they were legitimate threats it was too late. Might be an unpopular opinion, but that Hicks call really did change the series. We went from likely tied 1-1 going to Shawinigan to down 2-0. At the very least after Saturday we're looking at trailing 3-2 with a more realistic chance at getting back into the series.

I can see 73 going to the rafters probably the best goalie we've had on PEI, but if Ben Duffy's #16 isn't in the rafters then no other forward deserves to be there yet either. (I don't buy this whole "it's a different franchise" argument. We still have 22 retired for Bureau.. We are the same team and should celebrate its best players in history as 1)

You can’t be serious about Duffy? We’ve had several forwards since Duffy that were better. Anyways everyone has an opinion on players but I thought Duffy was softer than baby shit. But he’s way down the list. My list anyways

When deciding who should be a retired number there is more to it than scoring. Leadership of course, longevity - meaning 4 or 5 years with a team because it is a community respect honour. You really need it to be more than an all-star award. It should be a once in a decade thing . We can make a case for all kinds of players.
A goalie who stabilized a franchise - Halifax had JS Giguere. They also had Alex Tanguay but these honours came a long time after the player had left and in fact some organizations wait until they actually retire. Everybody knows who those guys are. For heck sake you are taking a number out of circulation.
If I was to pick a random Islander why not Keith Getson? I mean were just spitballin here. But name a player who was liked in the community, on the ice, with teammates, accomplished something with the Islanders, drafted by the team and stayed almost his whole career there less the last 4 months.
No I am not nominating him for the honour but just pointing out its easy to just nilly willy hand out retired jerseys when all that does is cheapen the honour. It needs to be something that isnt easy to qualify for, and frankly guys dont come into league to have their jersey retired. Its a humble distinction. There is nothing wrong with having no retired numbers.
