When deciding who should be a retired number there is more to it than scoring. Leadership of course, longevity - meaning 4 or 5 years with a team because it is a community respect honour. You really need it to be more than an all-star award. It should be a once in a decade thing . We can make a case for all kinds of players. A goalie who stabilized a franchise - Halifax had JS Giguere. They also had Alex Tanguay but these honours came a long time after the player had left and in fact some organizations wait until they actually retire. Everybody knows who those guys are. For heck sake you are taking a number out of circulation. If I was to pick a random Islander why not Keith Getson? I mean were just spitballin here. But name a player who was liked in the community, on the ice, with teammates, accomplished something with the Islanders, drafted by the team and stayed almost his whole career there less the last 4 months. No I am not nominating him for the honour but just pointing out its easy to just nilly willy hand out retired jerseys when all that does is cheapen the honour. It needs to be something that isnt easy to qualify for, and frankly guys dont come into league to have their jersey retired. Its a humble distinction. There is nothing wrong with having no retired numbers. P.O. Joseph Matthew Welsh and now Brett Budgell however i don't really advocate for any of them to have jerseys retired but appreciation nights and plaques on the wall in the arena... go for it

I stated it numerous times, and for me #10 should not be worn again.
5 years.
Strong leadership.
Great character.
Excellent player.
He wore the black and harvest gold on his heart.....
He's one of those players that, at least imo, Charlottetown "adopted him as one of our own"...
My vote will always go to Brett Budgell.

As an alternative to jersey retirement, the team can do like a wall of honor or something like that.

If we are talking about taking a number out of circulation just from the Isles years, I think Cormier has a better argument then Budgell. But Matt Welsh has the best and easiest case for that honor. Spent his whole Q career here, set pretty much every franchise record for goalies, 73 is not a common number.

I'd be down for that, celebrate the Q history on PEI

I'd be down for that, celebrate the Q history on PEI smart idea - it's not overkill but repeatedly can be used to market franchise success over and over every year. Not just 1 or 2 guys but pretty much all the notable guys.

I was hoping he would actually. Let the country see how piss poor some of the QMJHL officials are. A nationally televised game? You know he's gonna try to steal the spotlight.

Surprised to see that 4 out of 5 of the officials are from the Maritimes. Doiron is one of the good guys....congrats to him and the others who will represent the Q.

You always see him smiling and joking with players out on the ice. Mistakes will happen, but you'll see him own up to a blown call.

Happy to see Shawinigan get the W last night. Feels good knowing they beat a powerhouse Edmonton, and put up 4 on one of the top goalies in the CHL.
On the other end of the stick, sucks knowing it could’ve been us. But I’ll definitely be cheering for Shawi during the tournament.

Yeah, if #10 is retired for Budgie then #15 and #73 definitely have to go up at the same time.
