A few notes about the camp roster:
1. Of our 2022 selections, all but Matthew Butler (heading to Shattuck St. Mary's) are expected to attend. Now, there would be the expectation that at least a few of these guys would leave after 48 hours to retain NCAA eligibility.
2. American drafted defenceman Aryx Seifker, an 06 born from Connecticut, is listed as attending. This is likely to be a short visit. Seifker, is bound of Winchendon Prep for 22-23. Still, it is a positive to have someone from the American draft coming up check things out.
3. Listed on our protected list by not attending camp include:
-Matt Butler -Brandon Crowell; 2020 drafted forward who has spent the past three seasons at Mount St. Charles Academy, uncommitted to a college at this point -Ethan Gardula; 2021 American drafted forward who attends Cushing Academy and is uncommitted at this point -Ryan Greene; 2019 drafted forward who was recently selected in the 2nd round by Chicago... scheduled to start freshman year at Boston University this fall -Ronnie Hill; 2022 American drafted forward attending Seacoast prep... no college commitment -Patrick Leblanc; excess 20 y/o forward -Owen Saye; excess 20 y/o forward -Dawson Stairs; excess 20 y/o foward -Lukas Cormier; 20 y/o defenceman turning pro -Xavier Delage; 2020 drafted defenceman playing in the USPHL development program... no college commitment -Nicolas Hui; 2021 drafted defenceman who was played at Notre Dame the past three seasons... no college commitment -Shawn Leary; 2021 drafted American defencmean playing at Lawrence Academy... no college commitment -Ryan Maynard; excess 20 y/o defenceman -Matt McQuaid -Luke Vardy; 2019 drafted defenceman playing Jr. A in the BCHL... no college commitment
4. It is something of a surprise to see Matt McQuaid not coming back given how thin we will be on the blueline. That being said, we somewhat blundered his development by using him mostly as a spare forward last season. He really didn't get the necessary "at bats" as a major junior defenceman. He might have a stronger future by going to play Jr. A and playing a ton for the next two seasons rather than trying to get on track as a 19 y/o with limited experience.
5. The 20 y/o situation merits discussion. We are bringing 4 to camp. It is a well known fact that we have excess 20 y/o players. Dawson Stairs should be in camp. He is definitely a major junior player and should be playing in the league at 20. Hopefully we are able to get a deal in place to see him land somewhere and this doesn't end up like Bailey Peach last season where he found his own opportunity in the WHL. The cost to acquire Stairs was significant (Matis Ouellet and a 6th) was significant and it is important to recoup assets by dealing him.
As for the other non-invited 20's, they likely don't have the profile to pick up a opportunity to play in the Q this season. I think Maynard offers stability for a young team, but there likely isn't a fit. Leblanc, I feel is good enough to be in the league at 20, but his injuries last year limit any chance of this happening. Leblanc was playing his best hockey when he got hurt last season. I still wonder what kind of a difference it would have made late in the President's Cup if we had of had him healthy and available to offer experience at the forward position. Regardless, the story of his major junior career is one of being oft-injured and he'll likely thrive in Jr. A... if he's even healthy now.
And... beyond all of that, we have to resolve the situation with Gallant, Lapenna, Biakabatuka, and Trudeau all in camp. Trudeau has options in the Montreal organization, so that situation will impact which direction we go there.
Lots will happen in the next few weeks!

Great summary countryboy. In your opinion, who would be the odd man out if Trudeau returns? I don't see the point in Lapenna if you have Satny and Flanagan pushing for spots. But obviously they want to take a look at him. With the rumours around Biakabatuka this summer, it would seem from the outside that only Gallant is a sure thing.

Weird how we’re starting training camp so late again…most of the other maritime teams have played games and we’re still a day away from players reporting
Didn’t seem to hurt us last year so I guess it’s not a big deal haha

Exciting times. Safe bet that we aren't repeating last year's magic, but looking at that roster and we should still have a fun and hard working team to watch.
It'll just be nice to be back in the rink this winter.

Alright, first scrimmage analysis...
Goals (hopefully accurate):
1-0 White - Carl-Anthony Masse 1-1 Black - Brody Seitz 2-1 Black - Cardinal-Thom or Jelley... possibly tipped 3-1 Black - Kearsey or Rutledge... possibly tipped 4-1 Black - Edouard Vincent 5-1 Black - Jonah Jelley 5-2 White - Trent Crane 5-3 White - Lucas Romeo 6-3 Black - Marcus Kearsey
Team White standouts:
Tessier McMinn Seifker Damphousse Crane Allen Romeo Todd C-A Masse MacDonald Flanagan
MVP: Will Allen. Extremely good skater, has some wild stickhandling abilities. Going to give an honourable mention to Aryx Siefker, great defenseman, good size. Masse and Damphousse were very fun to watch too.
Team Black standouts:
Kearsey Cardinal-Thom Topilinyckj Morneau Ling Jelley Rutledge R. Campbell Michaud Kollias Bowness Seitz Riff
MVP: Mathieu Cardinal-Thom. His tall stature was very noticeable, decently aggressive and skates well. Was getting close to some guys and chirpin' em with a chuckle. Honourable mentions to Jelley, Michaud and Kearsey... the latter looks ready to play imo.
Other notes: - Very even game despite the score... some good hockey... lots of guys look to be fighting hard for a spot - Keiran Gallant was reffing... that's funny - Mitchell Wagner got cross-checked from behind in the first half along one of the corners (very unnecessary)... Matthew Schlosser was the checker... noticeable blood on the ice, looks like his head hit in between the bottom of the board and the edge... ouch... didn't return, but was walking around - Giovanni Morneau is a small one but he was trying hard to find every way through traffic... had a great chance to show off good hockey sense with a guy open on the other side... instead went for a shot - Jonah MacDonald was a late add... just got cut from CB Eagles camp... looked off at first but seemed better in the second half... almost finished a beautiful play at one point - Both of the American kids played great, especially Seifker... both are likely leaving after 48 hours, I can only imagine... would love to see them stay or consider coming down the line

Great rundown. Thanks for providing this.
When you think about it, this is by far the most interesting camp we’ve had in a long time, with all of the jobs that are available.
In 21-22, we knew we had a strong team to contend with and there were only a couple of jobs up for grabs.
In 20-21, the team was basically assembled before training camp. Isolation rules meant that only a skeleton crew attended camp that summer.

Monday morning scrimmage analysis...
Had to be called off after one half due to zamboni issues. Sounds like they had issues Sunday night as well.
Very sloppy and inconsistent... but a lot more physical & defensive versus previous scrims, and goaltending was a LOT better than Sunday. Hard to tell who stood out the most, but here's what I've got.
Goals:
1-0 Black - Bates Ling (a fantastic feed from Edouard Vincent or Isaac Vos... bad memory... Ling got into very good positioning for the breakaway feed, got stopped at first with a backhand dangle but put in a rebound) 1-1 White - Carl-Anthony Masse (great vision & feed by Jonah MacDonald iirc)
Team White standouts:
Tessier Simard (some mistakes & giveaways but played good when good) Seifker (same as Simard but played more physical than Sunday... was good in that area) Damphousse (same as above but a very fluent skater and can make good plays) Walker Arsenault (great shot power & skating... just needs to improve on accuracy and successful playmaking) Todd C-A Masse MacDonald (same as Arsenault but more inconsistent) Flanagan Aitken
MVP: The goalies. Flanagan's size helps make him more appealing... is also a very vocal communicator. A lot of guys on White were either fantastic or tired-looking. Good defensive performances by Tessier, Damphousse and Walker though.
Team Black standouts:
Vos (started good... looked tired after a bit) Kearsey Morneau (great hustle and improved a lot with IQ & sense... reminds me of Zac Beauregard) Ling Jelley Rutledge Murchison R. Campbell (surprisingly more physical than offensive... a lot of good hits, even on bigger players) Michaud All goalies
MVP: Alexis Michaud. He already looks like a Q player. A great all-around game. Will also point out that Rutledge and Murchison play great when on the same line. Every goalie was great.
Other notes: - Keiran Gallant and Michael Horth were reffing... Sam Bowness didn't play - Mitchell Wagner didn't play... was at the rink though... wonder if he suffered an injury after Sunday's incident - Did Nathan Mossey not report, or is he hurt? He's been on scrim rosters but I haven't seen him play
Still too early to tell who's got the best shot of making the cuts... just too competitive and lots of guys with good hustle. The games against Moncton should be good tests.

The Charlottetown Islanders announced today that Marcus Kearsey, the team’s top draft pick in the 2022 QMJHL Entry Draft, has signed a Quebec Major Junior Hockey agreement with the team.
“My excitement level is through the roof right now. I’m super excited, and I’m also relieved that it’s done and I can now just focus on camp and getting ready for the season. It’s a dream come true to be able to sign and put that pen to paper.”
Islanders Head Coach and General Manager Jim Hulton commented, “Marcus is your prototypical modern defenceman, a fantastic skater with high offensive vision. We’re thrilled to have him commit to the Islanders. He’s the exact type of player we want in our organization.”

The Islanders kick off their preseason schedule Tuesday night at the Avenir Centre against the Moncton Wildcats Some surprises, some not. McCallum might be a guy to keep an eye on for next year. Campbell was decent physically, but every other aspect of his game was heavily lacking. Cardinal-Thom has good size, but looks very thin. Kollias and Seitz were impressive with their shots & skating, but inconsistent. I think Ling will be a good player in the MHL, he was a lot better than expected imo. Good shot and gets in tight areas. I really hope Seifker and Damphousse consider returning down the line. Both have good potential in many areas, but also need more development. The remaining players appear to be: Will Allen Brett Arsenault Sam Bowness Ben Boyd Jakub Brabenec Ross Campbell Keiran Gallant Michael Horth Jonah Jelley Jonah MacDonald Carl-Anthony Masse Jacob McLellan Alexis Michaud Giovanni Morneau Carter Murchison Evan Nicholson Lucas Romeo Robbie Rutledge Jarrett Todd Mitchell Wagner Kevin Walker Boden White Jeremie Biakabutuka Simon Duguay Marcus Kearsey Beren Simard-Sancy Jacob Squires Alexandre Tessier Anton Topilnyckyj William Trudeau Edouard Vincent Isaac Vos Niko Boudreau Jack Flanagan Zachary Horth Francesco Lapenna Dustin Riff Oliver Satny
